Well unless you plan to lock down all your profiles and treat them as local data only you are pretty much forced to use all these "features" regardless if you care about them or not.

I see your point.
One way around this is by making ALL features in the program optional. This way nobody is "forced" to, or "imposes" anything.

(If by chance the program's developer/owner is reading this.......)

A simple checkbox in preferences would suffice...

User "A" wants to track how much he paid for a DVD.....no problem, this is already part of the program and he need do nothing. User "B" has no use for "price paid", in fact may even hate it.... by putting a checkmark in a box, "price paid" won't even show up/display in his local layout.

OP wants to track 3D bluray......and some others don't....if approved for implementation then it would be simply a question of checking/uncheckig a box.....everybody wins....nobody "forces" or "dictates" anything. You like it you use it, you don't like it, then don't use it.

In my opinion, the online database (of which I have zero interest in) and the DVDP program/features (of which I am very interested in) should be treated as 2 separate entities.

Totally agree with that.

But at present time, the best is to never use anything coming from the online, since using it means losing all database functions of the program : linking, filtering, sorting...

Just in case you would like to play around ... there is a new plugin SideCar, which allows the configuration and use of the new DVDP feature: custom fields.

Custom fields:
- can be saved and restored with the main database and online
- can be used in HTML sections
- can be filtered on
- cannot be contributed

With SideCar, you could define your own checkbox for 3D Blu-Ray and display it on your layout, and filter for it on the Filters tab.

I know it is not a replacement for the main program feature, but it is there in case you would like to try it. I have a feeling that widely used custom fields might someday be supported in the main database, and if that happened, your custom data would already be there, correctly associated with the relevant profiles. The data would have to be copied over from the custom field to the official field using a simple utility that either Invelos would supply, or that any plugin developer could write.
Thanks for your support.

This is no different than distinguishing PAL and NTSC (you need the proper hardware for those, but it is still the same media)

Not true anymore.  That used to be the case when the DVD player output went to an analog display, especially in the states.  The MPEG-2 encodings on the disc were neither PAL or NTSC, as those are specs for OTA/cable/satellite/baseband analog.  The MPEG-2 video is either 480i29.97 or 576i25.  The reason for the "PAL" or "NTSC" was because of the RF/analog output that fed a PAL or NTSC TV.  Overseas, DVD players were a dime-a-dozen that played both 480i and 576i discs on PAL, or multi-standard monitors.  Hell, they were even region neutered.

Today's Blu-ray players will play 480i or 576i, at whatever frame rate, on today's displays.  The only gotcha is still the region code.  There is still region code issues with Blu-ray.  But, like DVD players, Blu-ray players can be purchased that are neutered for DVD, or manually select the Blu-ray region.  I have one of those.  So, I can play all of my region 2 Doctor Who 576i25 DVDs on my Blu-ray player and monitor.  No more analog.  All digital.  On my older Samsung, I can play 576i25 DVDs on it too, as long as region 1 is part of the authoring (no such thing as a region free DVD).

So, in a nutshell, the PAL/NTSC excuse doesn't hold water anymore.  You only have to know if the region coding on the release (DVD or Blu-ray) can be played on your system.

If that's your primary concern, then I think you are asking for the wrong solution.

Just one thought about the topic of playback: Every Blu-ray 3D release sold can be played on a 2D setup. Some labels choose to have one disk that can be played back in both ways and some decide to put two separate disks into the case. But there are no "only 3D" Blu-ray releases in stores.
Recently bought films:

The Matrix [Blu-ray] | Shirins Wedding [DVD] | The Graduate [Blu-ray] | Prometheus [Blu-ray 3D] | Hwal [DVD]

The above info is indeed true.  But, the point that everyone seems to be ignoring is that there are 3D Blu-ray discs that will NOT play in a 2D player, nor will it play in a setup that won't display 3D, even if the 3D player will play them.  A prime example is Captain America: Winter Soldier.  That 3D release has TWO separate discs, one for those that can play 3D and a 2D disc for those that can't.  Then there is the same movie released 2D only.  There needs to be a separate category for 3D Blu-rays.  When you click on an item in your collection and it is a 3D movie, the general screen does not show that it is 3D, only that it is Blu-ray.  Here is the kicker... that title as submitted to the database doesn't even include 3D in the title.  The only way you discover that it is 3D when you click on the title is the front cover image.

Blu-ray has different profiles that define which features are supported.  Some of the very first players are Profile 1.0 and don't support 3D or other features such as BD-Live (profile 2.0) or BonusView (profile 1.1).  The 3D feature is only supported by Profile 5.0 compliant players but that doesn't change the fact that it's still a Blu-ray.  Maybe an addition to the program to specify the profile type would be appropriate.

Then what is the right solution to quickly be able to identify Blu-ray 3D and UltraHD on the main page as well as be able to search the on-line database for said releases?

'Tis true.  But, there are, in many cases, separate 2D and 3D releases.  Try searching for only 2D or only 3D.  And soon, try searching for only UltraHD releases.

And further complicated with UltraHD.

I just can't wrap my head around why so many hate the idea of having Blu-ray 3D and UltraHD added as separate media in order to have logos for Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray UltraHD appear on the main page, along with DVD, Blur-ray and HD-DVD.  As well as have them appear in the pulldown list for searching.

IMHO, that would greatly increase the usability of the program/database.

+1. I couldn't agree more. I've argued for Blu-ray 3D in the past and got shot down in flames. So I can't have a Blu-ray 3D banner displayed, just a standard Blu-ray banner instead. It's just ridiculous. Now with 4K Ultra HD just around the corner, is it going to be a similar battle? I'm sure there'll be those that will argue that a 4K Ultra HD disc is still a Blu-ray disc so it doesn't need a separate media type. (And again, stuck with the standard Blu-ray banner! ffs).

Create a Custom Media Type (Tools -> Edit Media Types...) and assign any banner you like.

Yes, that is not what you want, but would be the best approximation possible at the moment.

Well, according to the latest audio visual application format specifications for BD-ROM white paper from the BDA, UltraHD is considered Profile 6 and is seen as a new extension to the existing Blu-ray format rather than a completely new format.

Guess we'll have to wait and see how Ken ultimately incorporates changes for UltraHD BD.

I have done that, problem is though, if I also tick "Blu-ray" (for titles with both a Blu-ray disc & a Blu-ray 3D disc) then my banner gets over-ridden with the standard Blu-ray banner. The only way around it (& a really odd quirk) is to also tick "slip case". This brings back my 3D banner for some reason. So I've got that work-around, but of course I no longer have an accurate record of slip cases.

I think things like "Blu-ray 3D" and "4K Ultra HD" should simply be built into the program with the option of using them or not with a simple tick - (and the correct banner applied). If you don't want to use it don't tick it. Simple! But give us the option "in the program".

Cheers.
