Skip - good idea. Similar, I have not had a look at HD-DVD and Blu-ray yet. I plan to buy one of them in a few years time, and then I'll check it out. In the meantime, the rules stays as they are, and you are to contribute them by adding HD-DVD or Blu-ray in the description field PERIOD.

Actually, the rules have been changed:
Quote:
Use the "As Credited" field where the actor's name differs from the credited name.

(It says the same thing in the Crew and Cast section. One is left to assume that the first instance refers to crew 'actors'.)

Online name linking has arrived!

Unfortunately, I think this sets the stage for ping-pongs. WHO is going to determine what name should be used, it would seem to be better to stick with As Credited and change the As Credited notation to AKA. This reminds of the old T2: UE wars.

Daniel Craig, is it Dan, Daniel, Danny, D. or what? For those of you who don't know this a hypothetical case. But which user gets to determine what the common name is, tlevel, Hal?   And how do we prevent ping-pongs over the data. It's a great idea and I am all for it, always have been but....

Inefficient and ineffective. How does that prevent ping-ponging data, James. Locks will protect your data, they have yet to prove effective for the Online. And votes.......lol.

I'm referring to the main database locks. From the database page:
Quote:
Here you can review profile database contributions pending for DVDs in your collection and help shape the DVD Profiler database.

For profiles that are accurate and verified, you can also place locks to ensure the data stays correct.

"Help shape the database" = vote
"ensure the data stays correct" = "Prevent ping pongs"

We have the tools.

This product has the nice partial acceptance for profile changes. I think that should cut down dramatically on the "ping-pong" of titles that everyone seems so twitterpated about. If you don't like a change, don't put it into your local. And don't try to change it in the master.

I fail to see what the fuss is all about. I have failed to see that since the 2.5 beta. It just doesn't matter.

Looks great Ken, but what happens with names like Courteney Cox Arquette vs. Courteney Cox?? Depending what a person has in their local database and the other name shows up? Will we always have to be on the look out for these, or are you going to have a forum where people can decide on what the common name should be?

A forum or at least a thread about this topic seems a good idea to me ! We should explicitly decide which common names to use to avoid pingponging.

I am very, very happy with the "credited as" feature: this is how I always hoped it would turn out, although many users have always assured me that it would never happen this way...

Has it? Maybe I'm wrong, but it occurred to me that the software possibly uses ONLY the "credited as" names for the online database? So that when you upload a profile, only the "credited as" names are uploaded, and the "common names" you use in your local database stays just that: local? Mind you: I wouldn't have any problem with that approach!

We'll be able to find out for sure soon - I have a wrestling title contributed that was done completely in this manner, as with wrestlers, it's easy to do, since they have real names, but perform under stage names. I'll delete the profile when it's approved and released, then re-download it and report back.

This thread turned nasty pretty quick

@Skip - there will be changes here. Some you may not like some you no doubt will. Can you please PLEASE not jump in everytime someone has a suggestion or wants a change and slap them down. The best way for this to evolve is to get input from everyone (IMO).

Ken has given us new options to work with. The "as credited" will now grow into something that everyone can live with, but it will take input from many people to get it worked out.

BTW - when you said this:
Quote:
But which user gets to determine what the common name is, tlevel, Hal?

and then laughed it was totally uncalled for IMO and completely antagonistic. What would be wrong with either of those two 'determining' what a common name is. I don't know tlevel well but I have great respect for Hal and his knowlegde of the film industry in general. Eventually the voters will control what is correct and what is not correct. Let the system work. We will possible have some ping ponging for a while but I for one have faith in the system.

FWIW Gerri has already asked for patience and has said if the rules need to be addressed they will get to it in a coiuple of weeks. In the mean time we can discuss and debate what would work best.

@everyone:
This is a new site from a new conpany. Everyone should be starting fresh and at the same level. Many will see this as a positive, some no doubt will not. In just 1 day I have seen a few people poke their heads in that haven't voiced their presence at IVS in quite some time. It would be great to see some of those and others join the community again.

My suggestion to those who want to bully others I know the address of a site where a lot of people have recently left. Maybe you should go there and continue your bullying. I for one would like this place to be happy and free from personal attacks and I'm guessing I am not alone. (hey...one can dream can't he?)

Well hopefully as this site will be more heavily modded we won't end up with 50 page threads that go nowhere, which should help prevent too many attacks.

^^^^Well Said

I hadn't posted in the old forums for quite some time because the same arguments just kept repeating themselves and I  lost interest.

This is an opportunity to star afresh and help shape what is already an amazing product/database.

It is an exciting time and I hope this place can become a community where we can respect each other and work together and most importantly....Have fun.
