I'd like a reference to the Facebook profile to be part of the user's profile. Preferably other current social media sites if others so desire. Personally, though LinkedIn is supposedly professional rather than social, a reference to that profile too. Not everyone wants to cram these references in their signature texts.

Apart from a casual mentioning in some threads, I do not think this has been requested before.

I realised it is about time to do some maintenance on profile references when I saw Pete's thread about his changing home, where he referred to his initial posting on his Facebook page.

We now have ICQ ID (is there an IT-geologist in the room ?), a Yahoo ID (wasn't that Google nowadays ?), AIM (what on earth was that, ancient alien identification method ?) and MSN Messenger (liquidated by M$ in favour of Skype some time ago ). In other words, very much outdated.

Any suggestions, apart from Facebook and perhaps LinkedIn, what else?

I suddenly realised that a lot of sites allow a Twitter reference. Anyone?

Since the current references are, IMHO, quite outdated it all could be an easy change. Just rename the oldest ones to Facebook or whatever and clear current content in the central database. Anyone with suggested which one is "most outdated"?

Only snag to this approach might be that a lot of people expect a reference to a website (like a Facebook homepage) rather than just an ID. In other words, the field length and storage space might need adjustment too by Invelos.

I'm more interested in why we have those in the first place.  I've never once thought to come here to look up someone's social media contacts.  And (at this point) they don't really do anything here on the site or in the program.  So why do we have them?  If I want to speak to someone, I'd send a PM.  If I want to join them on some outside social media site, I'd PM them and request that information.

I'm not so much against this.  And I support the request.  I'm just curious what the purpose is.

Don't you feel ancient  when you see the reference on our user profile page .. for ICQ ...

I've asked numerous times in the past before any new invelos upgrades  and ICQ  is still there year- after year -after decade  after........

Well, they have been there in any kind of forum software for a long time.

Back in the 90s a forum of mine used to use the UBB (Ultimate Bulletin Board) software. Written in pearl it was a horrendous piece of software that was ugly to update because if you added an add-on the description went like this:

Open index.php, go to around line 880 and look for ... then insert.

Anyway, one of the most downloaded add-ons of that time was the add-on that allowed you to add your ICQ and AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) information. Back then everyone™ had one or both of them installed. It was just the way you chatted in modem times, before Facebook.

So if you met someone on a forum of your interest and you tried to get in contact with another user in a chatty kind of way, you'd use ICQ or AIM.

Nowadays every forum has a PM system but back then it was also just an add-on and it cost webspace. Sure, so did forum posts but at least with them everyone could read them and that was your incentive as forum hoster, so you get new users.

Now in the days of PM and Facebook and Skype these messengers have become pretty much obsolete.

I'm not ancient but internet ancient, I used to use them both. I also used to use Altavista and Yahoo before there was a Google. *now sounds like grandpa telling pre-war stories*

Ah, I see (no q  ). Had forgotten all about it, but now you decrypted it...

I too (still) like to use alternatives to Google, just for sport AND these often provide different results to the same queries -- often even better. Look for: DuckduckGo, Bing, Yahoo. Altavista nowadays refers to Yahoo.

I also note there is support for a Facebook reference. Not much for others (just the person who proposed that other).
