It is almost possible. (1) If your files have names which correlate exactly to some unigue feature of the profile metadata, then it is possible to write a small script to create a file to be imported with LoadDVD or BulkEdit plugin to be used with LoadDVD or My Links. (2) Or, if you already have a file, such as a spreadsheet, that connects the digital media to the correct profile, then it is even easier to write a script. The biggest problem is that most metadata is not unique. Take title, for example: to see this problem, go to DVDP and "Add DVD by Tittle" - see how many hits! The only way to solve this is to use several items of metadata such as Locality, Release Date, Media Type, etc. in order to get a unique match. The most unique element is what DVDP call "Profile ID". In simple terms, it is a combination of UPC/EAN and Locality (or Disc ID and Locality) that serves as a database key for DVDP profiles. If you have this information, then it is possible to import your collection with 100% accuracy. Please tell us what kind of filenames and folder structure you have, and we can give you some ideas. DVD Profiler has a built-in My Links to capture the file names, and there is a plugin LoadDVD that has more advanced stuff. But the hardest problem is: how do you decide which file(s) to associate with which Profile(s) in the database ... | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. | Posted: | | | | Cyberlink PowerDVD 13 has link to play movies from the hard. I have never used this feature but it might be worth looking into. You have create a folder store the movires there and tell the program and link. This latest program looks like it plays just about every thing. So I don't why the DVD profile do it or be made to do it also. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. Ineptocracy, You got to love it. | Posted: | | | | PowerDVD costs $90 if not pre-installed on systems, though.
Quite a price just to have such a feature (though the player is very good.) | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

| Posted: | | | | You guys (Srehtims, Blair) have totally missed the point. DVDP can very well play files using My Links, LoadDVD or HTML windows. The method is the same as for PowerDVD: point to the folder or file, and click on some kind of menu or icon. So, "So I don't why the DVD profile do it or be made to do it also." - in fact it already can. No need to get into a discussion of which is "better," etc. Your assertion that DVDP can't do this is just plain wrong.
Of course, DVDP does not have a built-in player, but it can be made to use anything that you have installed. Same with LoadDVD, and the Pro version even has its own built-in player. It plays just about anything if you have the codecs on your system.
HTML windows can be easily scripted that use either WMP or VLC player to play just about any file. See the Layout Forum for many examples that work just fine. Now, what the OP really wants, is for the program to scan the hard drive and somehow either create a database or associate existing files with an existing DVDP database. As I said in my previous post, this is a very difficult thing to do. I have some private tools that can be adapted to a particular user's folder and file structure. That's why I asked the OP for that information. I have a long-standing request to Invelos to make certain things available to plugins that would allow me to use my tools to do exactly what the OP wants. Without the Invelos information, I would need to purchase a license to a 3rd party database - very expensive.
Amoung other things, LoadDVD has a feature that allows the Profile to point to a folder, and it will give you an icon, which when clicked will present a menu of files to play. | | | Thanks for your support. | Posted: | | | | I really am shocked that I cannot easily add my movie files from a hard drive. This seems to me to be a basic function that should be there. I will now have to manually work my way through hundreds of files that will take me hours. Very disappointed! |

| Posted: | | | | While I have no use for it... I do understand the feature request. But I must say... I am surprised at anyone being so shocked that this feature isn't here. I mean the title of the program tells us DVD... files on the computer is not DVDs. And then if you go main page of the website it clearly states it is for tracking your DVD and BD collections. So forgive me... but it makes no sense to me that someone would be so shocked that files on the computer isn't covered in this program.
I know I for one would have checked it out and be sure it handled what I want it for before buying it. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I was really shocked too when I figured out that my DVD-player can't make me a fresh cup of coffee every morning. Now I have to use coffee maker instead. On the other hand, DVD-tray works as a functional cup holder. | | | Last edited: by Kulju |

| Posted: | | | | Yes of course I know what the app is called and I knew I'd get sarcastic replies. However, most if not all app's like this one handle movie files as part of a persons collection. That is precisely why I have added my surprise to a request for this feature. The ever declining use of physical media to watch movies and listen to music will continue and I hope that file based collections will be catered for in this app in the not too distant future.
I have close to a thousand movie files on my server and a large collection of DVD's. To have to manually add the files to an app will take day's of slog. | | | Last edited: by FelixDaHousecat |

| Posted: | | | | The main problem with video files is that they don't have some sort of standardized meta information.
Even the MP3 tag as we know it today wasn't originally there but a student in a stroke of genius came up with a way to tag every MP3 file without compromising the integrity of the MP3 file.
There are dozens of video file types an all of them carry minimal if any meta information.
What is a profiling program supposed to make of "The.Colbert.Report.2013.10.07.James.Spithill.HDTV.x264-2HD.mp4"? | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | In case any of you are interested the feature would work like this:
DVDP would read the file name/titles (not the metadata) of the movies on the hard drive and then present each movie title one by one in the 'add DVD to collection' window. After the correct movie has been selected from the 'add DVD to collection' window (and added) the next one would be presented. This would allow people with large file based collections to add them to the database without having to copy/paste/type the titles manually! It would also be cool if the various file types were detected and catered for.

| Posted: | | | | What annoys me about your attitude is that you presume that this entire community is incapable of or unwilling to do what you consider to be "simple."
Furthermore, my prior post goes into some details into what I, and some others, see as the issues, and some suggestions about some alternatives that I have used. Using existing plugins (e.g. BulkEdit), you could import ALL your titles within minutes, using the CSV import feature. You would have a database consisting of "manual profiles", with a minimum of a title as metadata, or you could import personal data, filepaths for playing the file, purchase price, etc. Depending on the speed of your PC, you can import at the rate of 30 - 50 profiles / minute.
Then, at your leisure, you would just change the Manual profile IDs to the UPC/EAN of the DVD that you want to correlate to your title, and the DVD metadata will download automatically.
On the other hand, in terms of your assertion that it would be handy to have some kind of automation provided natively in the program, I agree. But the owner has not yet given us (developers) a couple of the features to make this easy.
I do have some personal tools that I mentioned before. If you want to discuss that, send me a PM. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |
