We got a disc from Netflix... Silent Hill: Revelation... I haven't watched the disc yet... but I did pop it into my DVD rom. Thought I would even do some work for DVD Profiler while I had it here. And what do I find... Everything looks right... has the menu with the extras and such... but when I click on one of the extras all I get is a black screen that says this disc is for Rental Purposes Only. So Movie only is activated. Buy this film for all features... or something like that.

I never seen this before... every other disc I got from Netflix was exactly the same as what you buy. Have you ever seen anything like this before?

Yes, the DVD Profiler Community as a whole is happy about this.

Since all the other Netflix DVDs contained all the extra material I wonder why this one does not.

Are you able to return or exchange it?

It is the way the disc was made. It seems to be a rental version of the main release. So only thing activated is the film itself and a few trailers that automatically play when you pop the disc in. Both the featurette and the Theatrical Trailer was disabled... with a message stating if we want to see the extras to by the regular release disc.

Wouldn't change anything.

As Grendell pointed out some time ago Netflix (and other Rental vendors) quite often strip the extras of the disc. For cost reasons they seem to keep the menu-structure though.

Since Rentals are usually significantly cheaper than Retail-versions I would have no problems with this.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

It just caught me off guard... as it is the first one like it I seen... and I don't remember ever hearing about it either. Though that is because I seldomly watch the discs he gets from Netflix.

I don't rent movies so I don't know anything about them. I was curious why other Netfilx rentals include extras while this one doesn't. Is that information available when you rent the films?

It's not Netflix nor the rental companies.  It's the studios.  They believe it would increase sales.  If you buy discs used at rental places like Hastings you often see 'Rental Exclusive' on the cover.  Even then you can't be 100% sure.  I bought Young Adult and that had the bonus features removed, but made no mention of it on the cover.  Not a huge deal as the retail only contained a featurette or two.

Universal has messages on their Blu-Ray's for extras in Rental Versions. It looks like the extras are there in the menus, but if you try to play them, you get the"you're a cheapskate no extras for you" message.

But in many cases, the actual content is there, on the disc. It's just made not playable via menus and PUOPs. They will play using AnyDVD's speed menus though, which are quick non java based menus AnyDVD patches in that load quickly, bypass ads, and let you play whatever content is on the disc right away, however you want. I supposed that makes the DVD Profiler Community as a whole sad.

I've rented DVD's that have just the film on them from Blockbuster, RedBox and NetFlix. Don't have a problem with it, until I buy from Blockbuster and the case doesn't say the extras that are on the case are not included.

The extras still probably exist on the disc itself but just the menu link was broken/redirected.

They probably put rental movies onto single layer discs so can't fit the extras - but retain the menu structure.

Just so I am completely clear...I have no problem with rental versions not having the extras on the disc. I have seen that many times and completely understand. When I was talking about this being a first is where the menu shows the extras listed... you can even click on the extras... but then it only brings you to a text page telling you to buy the regular release to get the extras. That is all I meant.
