I was curious what everyone's opinion is on this.  When I look at the database and discs up for consideration I often find items on my "WISH LIST" to be voted on.  I normally just skip voting on these items as I do not really know if what I am voting on is correct.  I know we can all look at cover scans and vote as that is very subjective,  but what about cast and crew contributions or even features?  My question is do you think we should vote on things that are not actually in our collection?  Personally I would for wish list items not to pop up for voting.

This has come up multiple times and the resolution is always that we should be able to vote on stuff on the Wish List.

What I've never seen discussed would be an option for the user to see them or not.  I think you'd have better luck requesting that since you'll probably find a lot of users who would like to see Wish List items.  And that would please both sides.

For better or for worse, we have never blocked users from contributing to profiles they don't own, nor have we blocked users from voting on contributions for profiles they don't own.  In point of fact, the practice of voting on contributions for profiles users don't own has been going on for many years.

In these cases, no, it is not likely that the users' wishlist contents is an accurate protrayal of their intent to purchase.  However it is also the case that these users are some of the most careful and accurate voters.

Similarly, the users who take it upon themselves to improve profiles that are not in their collection are some of the most accurate contributors.

For these reasons, we have chosen not to block contributions or voting in these cases.  I'm happy to reconsider this policy if the community feels it is necessary.  However, be advised that if a change is made, it will prevent both contributing and voting, not one or the other.  This is something I have considered in the past and have developed a decently secure method of preventing extra-collection contribution/voting.  I would prefer not to implement this change as I still feel it would be detrimental to the overall database.

To recap:
- We do not (currently) prevent users from contributing or voting on profiles they don't own.
- If you are contributing to a profile that you don't own, our only requirement is that the notes submitted accurately reflect the source of the data, and state the specific profile used as the source.

Clear as mud?

As you see by the quote Kathy provided... Ken allows us to contribute and vote on stuff we do not own. So that is what we have to work with.

For my feelings personally... not really a yes or a no. It is sometimes. As there is a lot of times that you can easily vote without having the disc in hand. But since you didn't have that as a poll option... I voted yes.

The reason I say sometimes... there is plenty that you can vote on without pulling or having the disc..

- Someone admitting to using IMDb or other online database
- Rating Details from Ratings.com or region's official site
- Title from cover... can see this in scan
- Edition added... can see this in scan
- Genre additions... if you seen the film/show (or a lot of time even just the trailer) you can know this
- Release Date added
- Cover scans with spine
- Cover scans still inside the keep case
- Thumbnails submitted to replace full size images

and I am sure there is others that I am not thinking of at the moment.

But then there is other times I wouldn't feel comfortable voting without the disc.
- Correcting running time
- Cast and crew lists
- Aspect Ratio
etc., etc., etc.

So as I said... for me personally the answer would always be sometimes.

As I said some things can easily be voted on but many really cannot.  I should have done a better search before posting this question.  If I can I will pull this thread before this gets ugly.

Just when I was about to post my usual message on the contribution subject
But I'll wait the next occasion to respect your "not ugly" request
