Did the actual use of the entire sound credit (sound, sound recording, sound recordist, sound supervisor, recorded by) get changed at one point to no longer use it if there's a Production Sound Mixer credited?

Didn't it just used to very specifically be "recordist" that didn't get entered when a Production Sound Mixer was credited?

And speaking of that, when did "recordist" get removed from the crew chart? And was there a specific reason it got removed? A thread I missed somewhere or something?

Yes it did get changed.

Now for a little history. The sound category was never intended to be a catch all, it focused on actual sound credit, which was used in the early days of film up to about 1965, further research over time moved 1965 to about 1983. Then lo and behold Hollywood brought back a sound credit in some contemporary shows. That's the history, what was done was done by Ken.

So I guess the submissions to remove the sound credit where there's a PSM credited are correct. Huh. Good thing I hadn't voted no yet.

Yes.

No, this was a misunderstanding caused by the fact that the the credit of recordist and the note were added, thus highlighted, at the same time.

I honestly don't know.  Had you not just mentioned it, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

Beyond the history I gave you and reading Martians post I am a bit flummoxed at trying to figure out what the answer is.

If we kill sound recordist, that makes The Wizard of Oz a silent picture essentially. It has one sound credit...sound recordist. I don't believe that is what we want to achieve, at least its not what I envisioned but.....

Sound Recordist is still listed as a valid role to list under "Sound" according to the crew chart.  You're just not supposed to list this person if there's a PSM credited.

Actually the mere "Recordist" (without the leading "Sound") was never listed.
I can remember several discussions if this would be an allowed entry anyway.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Actually, according to this post by Pete, it was.

My recollection of the recordist credit, and the new note, being added, thus highlighted at the same time, was reinforced by this thread.

It definitely was at one point. I have a printed copy of the rules (makes it easier to just quickly check when I need to) where recordist is listed.

I've apparently listed a few sound credits wrong in my database. I was always under the impression it was just "recordist" that wasn't supposed to be listed when a PSM was credited. Dammit!    Just when I think I'm gettin' ahead....

Well, at least now I know. Thanks to everyone for info!

Ooops,
must have missed the period when it was listed.

Sorry.
