A question: Would all the valid BY's be in that pinned topic 'accepted birth years', or could there be others in the db that have been validated but not in that forum topic. If so, is there a full list available somewhere.

Just getting tired of when updating my profiles all these BY's come through and mess up my lists and I don't know if they are valid or not.

No not all are in the pinned thread. Some people add to the database but not the thread... which if you think about it is perfectly understandable. Just like contributing itself... forum participation is not mandatory to contribute.

And no... there is no where that there is a complete list. As none of it wold be mandatory to add to.

Sorry for the bad news.

Kluge's awesome list is far easier to work off than searching forums:

All credit to Kluge of course.

If Kluge wouldn't mind, I wonder if this could be pinned next to the other BY thread.

can't exactly be pinned since it is on a different site. But I did bookmark it for future use.

Keep in mind that these are just ones that are in the above birth year thread... won't be all that is in the database.

Hmm.. so this is so confusing.... imagine this.

A profile is downloaded/updated and includes a BY to which you have no idea if it was validated or not as there is no way to check. Thus the entry for that cast member has a BY you know nothing about.

Then a few weeks/months/years later you acquire a dvd, in which this particular cast member has a role. You submit a profile for this entry and then get the request to validate the BY for the cast member in the contribution. Obviously you don't have any supporting evidence. So, I guess you don't submit the BY info in the contribution.

Then everytime you do updates, one profile keeps wanting to remove the BY while the other likes to keep it. How on earth do you manage something like this?

This is really annoying.

I understand the annoyance.... but as far as I can see it... pretty much all you can do is find the supporting documentation and add it to the birth year thread. If you can't find the documentation... then it is pretty much as you said above.

I manage it by stripping all BYs from my local db.

There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Do you guys think it might be worthwhile petitioning Invelos/Ken to add any valid BY's to the CLT?

I guess at least then we could see if a BY was valid.

I think the most they would be able to do is show accepted birth years.... not necessarily valid ones. As there is some accepted but not valid birth years in the database. And then it would be on a profile basis... as that is how they seem to be in the online database (we have to add the BY to every profile... not to just a name).

Besides... not sure how much we would be able to get Invelos to do since they are trying to do away with the need for birth years all together...

Quoting Ken Cole:

(...)  Ideally any replacement system will also improve upon the current system:

- Eliminate the birth year in the online database
- Eliminate the CLT as a name determination tool
- Allow entry of properly accented and formatted names
- Require no changes to existing profiles when an actor changes names (e.g actress gets married)

(...)

So with them working on a new linking system that could possibly do away with the need of birth years all together... sometime in the future... I don't see them doing too much.
