Ok I realise there was a recent discussion in this forum under the "Box Set Rule or Feature Film Rule" thread started by CharlieM. But I was thinking, especially since I am considering a lot of my future purchases will prefer to be combo packs (Blu-ray + DVD + maybe 3D or digital)

As pointed out in above mentioned previous thread (and other threads) with a combo pack - let's take a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack as an example - you can enter and submit it as one main profile listing both discs in the profile OR it is optional you can just have the main media (Blu-ray) in the main profile and add the dvd as a child profile, like we do for boxsets.

So I was wondering. What happens if I buy Combo A and submit it as a single profile with both disc id's and another member has Combo B which they submit as a main profile with the dvd as a child profile. Then sometime later I buy Combo B and go, hold on this is the wrong way and try and submit it as a single profile and the other member buys Combo A and goes hold, the dvd should be a child and submits it.

Depending on the screener, a tug of war could ensure over combo pack profiles in the db.

Don't you think we should maybe get a consensus and perhaps request a rule change so there is only one method to contribute profiles for Combo Packs? Currently I am not advocating either method but I am concerned that my combo packs are going to end up being of different formats  - unless I do the other way locally.

I just feel we need to establish a single method for these babies....

I agree with you. I lean towards the parent child concept, the reason is it is the only method which allows to delineate what the features are related to each member of the. Combo. We cant do that with a single profile.

Always put both discs in the main profile.  If someone wants to submit the the 2nd and/or 3rd discs (if it's a 3D pack) as child profiles, with the main profile as the parent profile, that is within the rules.  It is optional to do that, though. So, in your 2nd scenario, you would be correct by the rules if you added the 2nd disc and the other member would not be correct by the rules if he/she tried to submit the profile that takes out the 2nd disc.
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

There is no 'OR', it is always submitted as one main profile, using the data from the HD media, checking both media types and listing both discs in the profile.  The addition of a child profile is the only part that is optional.

Well I see that as more ambiguous then you do. I see the line that says "with all included media types checked", but to me that is referring to the checkboxes on the first part of the General Information.

Also, IMO, I don't like the idea - if you submit the DVD as a child - that you then have the dvd disc id in both the mail profile and the child profile. Kinda goes against what I used to for normal boxsets. Just seems odd.

We also have to worry about discs that contain 3D Blu-ray and discs that contain a digital copy. This means some combo packs could contain 2 blu-ray discs and 2 dvd discs.

Please also remember I am not arguing the existing contribution rules, I am proposing to somehow start a discussion to try and clarify a new set, or better worded set of the rules that relate specifically to combo packs and thus have a section in the rules for combo packs just like there currently are sections for box sets and tv profiles.

When i download the child profiles in a TV series i simply remove the Disc IDs from the parent.  Problem solved, only one profile has each disc ID in my DB.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

That is exactly what it is referring to, but there is more to the rule:

"Sets containing the same film on multiple media types (such as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack) are to be entered as a normal profile for the main media type (Blu-ray in this example), with all included media types checked. A combo which includes HD media (HD-DVD, Blu-ray) as well as DVD should use the details from the HD media in the main profile. However, you may add an additional profile by Disc ID for the DVD content and add this profile to the Box Set contents for the Blu-ray profile."

The first part of that rule say to create a normal profile for the main media type, the Blu-ray, and check all included media types.  A normal profile, that includes multiple discs, includes the disc IDs in that profile.  The second part says that the main profile should use the details from the HD media but a child profile for the DVD can be created and included in the Box Set section of the main profile.

I understand, but this isn't a normal box set and, under the rules, it is treated differently.

Yes, this does need to be addressed.

Again, I understand, but this isn't the forum for that discussion.  While this forum is for discussing the contribution rules, it's for discussing how best to apply them in specific circumstances, not how to change them.  If we discuss how the rules could be changed here, new users could get confused and think they are allowed to do things differently based on what they read here.  Just my opinion.

I am open to discuss this but Martian is right this is not probably the best platform. I am not crazy about having full details in Combo children, cast/
crew for instance. But that is the price. I do want to have access to the data specific to each disc in the combo and that cant be captured in single profile.

Don't get me wrong, I am open for discussion as well...not that there is any need for it on my part as I think we are on similar pages and believe there is a better way to do this than is currently set up in the rules...I just don't like doing it here.

Ok, well I am a newbie and don't have access to that. I'm guessing I need to be around 10 years or more and get into a lot more forum fights so I have enough bruises to be accepted

With the way this place works, you'd think that'd be the case, wouldn't ya? You surprisingly enough, just need to request access to it. Ken or Gerri I believe. Good luck trying to track down the absentee parents and get a response to pretty much anything however...
