Apparently it is possible for multiple people to do a first contribution for the same profile.
This got me thinking: if these contributions are all approved, which data is then taken for the resulting profile?

I was in that situation once. The earliest contribution got approved, mine, the later one was declined. I dont know if it is standard or if a screener looked at the competing contributions and chose, though.

A lot of times, the first one get approved and any that follow get thrown into the voting pool.

From what I have seen, it is the standard.  The rest, as Charlie said, get thrown into the voting queue and are usually declined.

... and this is why I try to put up a basic "pre-release" profile so that it can be accepted ahead of time and all the detailed contributions which happen on release all get voted on so they can be properly assessed.

... however it would be even better if some of the people contributing on day/near-day of release checked to see if anyone else had done the same rather than clash on "some is better, some is worse" data.

How does one do that? If a contribution for a profile is new, it does not show up when one selects View Contributors.

Indeed.  As far as I can tell, you don't know there are other contributions until one has been accepted.

I believe it does show up if you upload your database (so the online database knows you have the EAN) before trying to contribute it.

I've tried this. I believe it only works if a previous contribution has already been accepted but not released (so if a contribution was accepted at noon, and you tried to upload a "new" profile at two, it would show there's been a contribution even if it hasn't been released yet). I could be wrong though, but that's what I remember happening to me a few times (vs. uploading a "new" contribution after someone else already has and it hasn't been approved yet).

The only way I know to find out if someone has contributed a new profile before you have, is to check after you've made your submission. From your contributions page (the page where it lists everything you've contributed in the past 30 days), click the paper icon under the title of the profile you've submitted. Even if another new contribution was made before yours, when you click that paper icon, it'll take you to the notes page for the contribution. There it will show if there's a contribution pending for the new title before yours, approved yet or not.

I've done this a few times to find that someone else "beat me to the punch" so to speak, so I'll withdraw my contribution, wait for the upload, basically ignore it, and then contribute mine to view the differences and contribute whatever needs to be contributed from there.

That's the only way I've found so far.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

Then there should be something in/on the system that informs the next contributor that there is a "Pending Contribution Awaiting Approval".

Or is that too hard too implement?

Steve

PS. Even if it then also asks if you want to "Continue".

As the information is available for the screeners and on the My Profiler / Contributions page, I think this is not too hard to implement. I would welcome such an addition to the programme.

But I believe it does in the contribution notes, for instance Doctor Who: Nightmare of Eden (UPC=883929231690) released last tuesday:

It can be implemented in an HTML window, for instance:

Any user can quite easily determine if a contribution has been made or not. The question thatbi have is what is this really about. Contributingbor getting your name on the board as a contributor. I haven't seen a question like this in years.

As I said in my question I just wondered what happens with the data.
As I understand now from other comments it's pretty much first come first served, so the situation described does not occur. Problem solved as far as I'm concerned.

That is all that it was about. I'm not sure why you are questioning my motives here. It was just a question out of curiosity, nothing more, nothing less.

Jesus... and you wonder why people attack YOU? Just ONCE think about what you're posting before you hit the friggin' submit button. You have no right to question the motives of anyone on this board.
