The website forum search function has been significantly improved.  It should no longer timeout regularly, and the results should be significantly more relevant.

Let me know if you see any sort of wonkiness.

Just tried it out... a little on the slow side (maybe because I chose any date)... but worked nicely. Allowed me to find a thread I wanted to bump in the Feature Request forum.

Thanks Ken!

Don't know why, but searched for "ADR" (DVD Profiler -> Contribution Discussion, Any Date).

Not only that the search did not timeout. There were findings.

It's been so long since I've used it, I couldn't remember where to actually find the search function.

Tried out a search (for an old common name thread that's probably on page 150 of the contribution forums) and sure enough, it actually turned up results. Nice.

It'll be a lot easier now to search for things like BY's (to add verification to contribution notes).

Thanks Ken. Much appreciated correction to the forums.

The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

That was my first reaction as well.

The search function went from always timing out to extremely fast for me. I don't remember how it worked before (It's been so long since I tried it,) but I like how it handles partial matches.

Created indexes?

That's my guess as the forum would become unresponsive as a whole if someone performed a search.

Now to see if I can likewise remember where the search button is....

Fantastic. Just answered a question without making a new post or thread. Turns out my question had been answered a bunch of times before. So the increase in search traffic might be balanced by a somewhat lesser load of repeat questions and duplicate threads. Too bad Ken doesn't allow us to give him greenies!

I've thought that myself from time to time.  On the other hand, he can also give himself 5 stars.  So I don't feel too bad for him.

Ahh if only it were that simple.   The proper indices were in place long ago, and MS' full text search engine as well.  I had banged my head on this a while ago and had run into an interesting symptom - the query ran fine via query analyzer, but routinely timed out when run via the web page.

When I decided to tackle this again the other day, I rewrote the search to use a stored procedure rather than generated sql, and along the way improved the query quite a bit. (I've learned a bit since I originally wrote it. )

When I was done, I had it very performant compared to the prior version.  Yet in the end I discovered that the query ran fine (many searches are sub-second) when run directly in the query analyzer, but again consistently timed out when running the stored procedure. I had been blaming asp.net for the problem, but now could remove it from the investigation.

This led me to the culprit - something sql server does called parameter sniffing.  Certain cases confuse the hell out of the optimization engine.  The solution in this case was simply to redefine the passed parameters as local variables, and just set them to the passed values.  This apparently causes a reset of the optimization and in this case solved the problem.

Also, thanks for the notion on the greenies, but as you can see at the left, I'm green enough already!

We have a guy at work (we call him Mr. Optimize-Prime) who does nothing but optimizing database stuff.  His most recent work was a stored procedure that took 60+ minutes to run in production and got it down to 30+ SECONDS.

Yes, he's earned his nickname!

Aaaarghhh, Search page has now the same problem as CLT page. If you hit enter the page will sign you out. This is a MOST annoying feature. Could you please fix it Ken? I remember that there was another thread about this issue, but I cannot find it at the moment and I don't want to use Search

So it works correctly with a browser that's been used by 1,62% of browser users. Not a big help
Alt + Q doesn't do anything, but I assume that you mean Compatibility View mode, since that seems to work. I stil feel that the webpage fix would be better solution.

I have been using Chrome for about a year now and the fixed search function is great. Thus far it only takes a couple seconds to search the entire website and get a result. Thanks for fixing this Ken, I no longer have to use the Google site search.
