When, if ever, do we use the 'Theme by' credit?

I have seen a couple of contributions lately, where the contributor is adding a divider for a song title, and the divider lists the name of the song plus "Movie Name Theme" or "Theme From Movie Name", but the credit checked is 'Song Writer'.

Shouldn't these be credited as 'Theme by' or am I missing the purpose of this Profiler credit?

Yup, totally agree. A Theme is a Theme, and a Song is a Song...there shouldn't be much confusion there.

I believe one of mine "The Perfect Storm" would fit this criteria. I'm going to change it and resubmit, but first, should I leave the song title or remove it?

I was afraid because of the original submission date it could be accepted or declined the way I originally contributed it so I resubmitted with the Theme By credit and kept the song title divider.

There is if it's 'Theme Song by' - but that's still a theme as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know hulk. There is a big difference in the James Bond theme and the theme from Goldfinger. Inés defines am entierro franchute anda one I'd for Swingle film. That and we have no provision for theme song by...yet.

There will of course always be the odd example in credits that the Profiler rules don't specify how we handle.

I agree...Theme by and Theme Song by should be treated the same.

I agree on that too, and it's one more thing that Ken really needs to add to the Crew table to avoid undue confusion.

Agreed, but at present theme song by is not an approved credit and is not the same as theme by. Ken care to weigh in?

From Webster's New World Dictionary, 3rd Edition:

theme (definition 4, identified as an Americanism):

short for THEME SONG

Agreed, in my opinion, it is a distinction without a difference.

If something is credited as a theme, I use it.
For instance, the Simpsons, theme by Danny Elfman.

Others are a bit more confusing as are they as song or theme, esp. when listed in the end credits with other songs. I just did a profile that had "love theme by" among the songs. Since it didn't have any "curtosy of ____ records" or copyright dates (all others did), it seemed like it was a theme for the film and I credited it as such. No one else has the title (or no votes at least: Catacombs is the film) so it might not matter if this right or not, but it seems right to me.
