Something like Lawrence Welk and his Orchestra

All credited on one line.

Would Lawrence Welk be credited separate and then his Orchestra be credited by itself, and both credited as "Lawrence Welk and his Orchestra"

Or would they all be associated as a group and credited as "Lawrence Welk and his Orchestra".

Another question, since parsing no longer matters for the online database is it ok to enter them in more than one line to duplicate the actual credit if it won't fit on one line?

I'd enter it exactly as credited, just like the Rules say.

If in your example you would split these up into two separate credits this would mean:
One credit for Lawrence Welk
and
One credit for Orchestra (Assuming that nobody really is trying to parse possessive pronouns)

While I can see the use of the first, there's absolutely no sense in the second.

This would only be useful if you are able to find out the names of the Orchestra members. Then the credits would be:
John Doe [Orchestra]

But since this would be very hard to verify, I'd go with "exactly as credited", just like the rules and Hal say.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Locally, I generally credit these as

Lawrence Welk as Orchestra Leader
Lawrence Welk Orchestra as Orchestra

For me this makes the most sense, since it A) preserves the fact that these are two credits (Lawrence Welk and his Orchestra) and B) makes the credit of "and his Orchestra" have context and make sense.

I generally parse it with Orchestra as the last name if it will not all fit in the first name field.

Of course, I'm pretty sure this is not the proper way to do it per the rules (which really don't cover this sort of credit).  That's why I say this is what I do locally.
