This is an interesting one. I own 2 copies of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
- UPC 043396212688
- UPC 043396126497

These DVDs do not have rating details on the covers. So I went to filmratings.com and they have this film listed twice.

One does not have ratings details listed.

But, they do for the other, The Collector's Edition, does: Some Intense Sci-fi Action, Mild Language and Thematic Elements.

They also list the one with rating details as being edited - I have no idea what they mean since both versions run time is exactly the same.

Since these are the same film - should these details be listed on any/all versions? Or not?

While the run time is exactly the same, the versions are not.  Spielberg mades some changes, in some of the scenes, that changes the tone of those scenes.

This is an interesting question as, technically, the original version does not have any rating details.  The MPAA sees these as two different films and, for that reason, I wouldn't include the details.

No, it's not like that at all. The three versions which exist, i.e. the original theatrical version plus two versions Spielberg tinkered with later on, each have a different running time. While I'll buy that we wouldn't want to apply the same rating details to two different cuts of the film, I definitely would apply the rating details if it was the exact same cut of the exact same film. And that's what I gathered from Kathy's post (and from examing the profiles) to be the case here.

The longest version of the three (the one that runs for 137 minutes), is the only one that does have rating details, and that's the version that Kathy has two copies of. And yes, then I feel those rating details are equally valid for both profiles.

Clearly I got something different from her post...mainly because she said, "They also list the one with rating details as being edited - I have no idea what they mean since both versions run time is exactly the same."  Based on that statement, I figured that both version...the edited and unedited...had the same run time.  My mistake for not checking.

If that is the case, and Kathy has two copies of the 1998 version, then I agree,  all releases of that version should have rating details.

No, I meant to say 1998.  The version that would become the 'Collector's Edition' was resubmitted to the MPAA in 1998 and received a rating, with rating descriptors attached.
