There's a contribution up for World Trade Center that adds 5 OMB's because the credit in the film is "Based on the True Life Events of".

I'm not sure how to interpret the rule here. On the one hand the OMB rule does say "Based on [anything] By", but on the other hand it also says "Adapted from another medium".

Now, "True Life Event" is hardly a medium, so is this a valid OMB credit or not?

Thoughts?

I don't know if it should or shouldn't be. Mainly because of the Adapted from another medium note.

I can say that my copy of the R1 US profile has 4 OMB credits...
- John McLaughlin
- Donna Mclaughlin
- William Jimeno
- Allison Jimeno

Not sure why it don't have the fifth one.

How should they not be included? They appear credited in the film, and the film itself is based mainly on the life events of 4 people. The writer of the movie didn't dream up the plot and main characters.

They're included in 40+ profiles in the database for World Trade Center.

If it's really that big of a deal though, I'll withdraw it...

True Life Events are not a medium.  Nor are the events "by" the persons cited; the events transpired involving them, but they were not written by them.

However, what I imagine the credit is conveying is that the events in the film are based upon the recounting of the events by the five named.  By that interpretation an OMB credit would be appropriate.

There's only four, no fifth is credited in the film.

Thanks Corey... in the OP he put 5... so that threw me. Gunner probably just mis-typed it.

A strict reading of the rules says, no, they should not be included.  Not only because there isn't another medium, but also because the credit is not formatted the same as the credit in the chart...there is no  'by'.  This film is not based on something by them, it is based on an event that happened to them.

That being said, I am torn on this one.  For what it's worth, IMDb has them listed.

Just to be clear:

I don't mind their inclusion. I just thought it was interesting to hear how people interpreted the rule. The fact that the film is based on what happened to them doesn't make it OMB. If that was the case then we would have a lot of OMBs for all kinds of biographies. The fact that they are credited doesn't necessarily make it OMB either.

As far as DVD Profiler is concerned, what matters is - as we all know by now - how they are credited.

I'm on the fence on this, so I'll vote Neutral and let the screeners decide.

Neither do I, but you asked for thought based on the rules, so that is what I gave.

I would do the same.  I don't want to vote 'no', but I can't vote 'yes' on something that, in my opinion, clearly violates the rules.
