This is a Canadian / Germany TV co-production. Currently this profile has the country of origin listed as Germany. But I feel the significant Canadian content and contribution should place Canada as the primary country of origin and not Germany.

The contribution rules state that the primary production company's country of origin should be listed however I don't believe primary and "first listed in the credits" is the same.

1) The production companies are as follows;

Tandem Communications, a Germany company
Muse Entertainment, a Canadian company
Scott Free Productions, a British company
The Movie Network, a Canadian cable/satellite provider with production offices
Movie Central, a Canadian cable/satellite provider with production offices
CBC, the Canadian Broadcast System.

Far more Canadian involvement than German.

2) As per the credits and back cover, this is listed as "A Quebec / Ontario Co-Production, Produced with the participation of and in association with The Canadian Film or Video Tax Credit" (Quebec and Ontario are both provinces of Canada). In order to qualify for these tax credits a significant amount of the production must be Canadian.

3) As per the credits and the back cover this is listed as "An official Germany / Canada Co-Production" but again I argue that "primary" doesn't mean listed first.

4) Filming was done in Austria and Hungary which is neither Canada nor Germany so I don't think that puts a vote in the Germany column either.

5) The official website, http://www.the-pillars-of-the-earth.tv, indicates that this is a full co-production of Tandem and Muse which would indicate equal billing so I believe this means that Tandem did not do the "primary" amount of production on this series. The website has trademarks "© Tandem Productions GmbH, Pillars Productions (Ontario) Inc., Pillars Productions (Muse) Inc." which would be one German and two Canadian companies.

I don't want to take anything away from the Germans but I strongly feel this is more Canadian than German. And until DVD Profiler supports two country of origins I'd like to see credit given for this one to us Canucks.

What do all of you think?

If anything, it probably should be left blank. I think that's what's been done in the past when there were different countries sharing production credit. As you said, hopefully whenever the next update for DVDP comes, there will be the option to have more than one production company.

Strangely the German box has "Canada" listed as CoO.

But I agree with "The Movieman" that CoO should be left empty until we either can enter several countries or get the option "Multinational"
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I do not like the "blank" solution. When a field is blank, that generally means that it has to be filled, so we'll have soon a new contribution if you just remove the Germany CoO.

I agree with ubermanx that the primary CoO should be Canada, so I think his argumentation should be explained in contribution notes, so that screeners can accept the change.

Because it is an international co-production (Canada/Germany) currently the best answer is to leave the field blank.  This is because we do not have the option to choose both, and do not have a selection for "Multiple."

I understand what Yves said about ping-ponging contributions, but leaving it blank is the only option.  Because someone else may change it back to Germany and list their reasoning for doing so.  Ultimately, I believe we should leave co-productions blank until we have a method to deal with them.

I've only had that happen once - entering a CoO in a field I purposefully left blank - and that contribution entered the wrong CoO anyway (it was left blank because the CoO is Botswana, and that isn't an option).  I haven't seen any changing blank co-productions.

This is all an unfortunate by-product of the tie between locality and country-of-origin fields, which we can only hope Ken will fix eventually by untying those two fields.

If you look for it, you'd be surprised how many films, including major Hollywood blockbusters, are actually international co-productions...

I'd rather enter something than nothing.  Based on the list in the OP, I'd opt for Canada.

That's right, unfortunately. And you can't blame the newbie contributor. Just another popular unsolved situation.

For those who would rather enter something than nothing, please unravel this one for me.  I'm not trying to be difficult here, I just think we need a solution that works every time for these situations.  And the only one I see is to leave the field blank.  If you can tell me what to enter for this film, and how you arrived at it, then maybe I'll understand how we can have a solution other than leaving that field blank.

These are the production company credits, in order given on screen, for the film Bread and Roses

Parallax Pictures (United Kingdom)
Road Movies Filmproduktion (Germany)
Tornasol (Spain)
Alta Films Production (Spain)
British Screen (United Kingdom)
BSkyB (United Kingdom)
BAC Films (France)
BIM Distribuzione (Italy)
Cineart (Belgium)
Film Co-operative, Zurich (Switzerland)
Film Four (United Kingdom)
WDR (Germany)
La Sept-Arte (France)
ARTE (France)
DEGETO Film (Germany)
Filmstiftung Nordrheim-Westfallen (Germany)

Makes my eyes swim just thinking about it.

For a simpler query, how would you classify Robotech?  Tatsunoko Productions, a Japanese company, produced three different anime series.  Harmony Gold, a US company, bought the rights and put the animation of the three together, writing all new scripts with different characters and different stories.

Yes, perhaps a number of international co-productions are clearly mostly in favor of one country being more responsible than the other.  I have several Algeria/France co-productions that are clearly in favor of Algeria as the primary country of origin (not that I can list Algeria, but that's another problem).  But Robotech is clearly 50/50, and Bread and Roses is just a mess.

However what we need is a solution that works every time this sort of thing comes up.  And the only one I see that works every time, for every sort of co-production, that we have available right now, is to leave the field blank.  Without some sort of consistency in what to do you end up with anything.

In fact "ARTE" is not French but a German/French TV station that produces movies too.
