I've just voted on a contribution to propagate a birth year for an actor, but am left with a question.
In this case the two people named in the list of accepted birth years are an actor and a visual effects supervisor.
I thought the list of names for crew and cast were separate, so if there was no other actor with the same name wouldn't the birth year be invalid?

Btw: in this case I voted yes because there are other actors with the same name as well, this just confused me.

The birth year will be accepted to differentiate between a cast and crew member.

So yeah, we indeed do use birth years to differentiate between cast and crew members. Off-topic: I can only hope this implies that at some point, the program will be able to show me both the cast and crew credits of a certain person.

You may want to have a look into the linked threads in these posts:

From Invelos it is Ok to use BYs for those cases.

I'm also hoping this is the reason:

Which is at the moment just shown within the CLT.

Personally, I'll probably never search cast and crew credits for the same person, as I do not see the interest for that. When Eastwood acts as an actor, he doesn't perform the same job as when he acts as a director. So the program as it is now fits perfectly my needs. That is why BYs to differentiate an actor and a crew with the same name are a loss of time, for me, and complicate without any usefulness the list of accepted BY. There are so many actors with same name that have no accepted BY that we have to solve this problem before mixing cast and crew.  We have reached a point where importing headshots databases without BY  is a nightmare, so we should not loose time for cast/crew BYs.

No, what we should do is not be so obstinate about removing "unnecessary" BYs, and just accept valid BYs where they are provided. Not as a requirement, but if they are there (and correct), they do no harm.
