I have the Windows version of this software and I was trying to justify the cost for a mobile app that basically keeps track of how many movie discs you own. I thought I would get some opinions on what folks thought would be the best price point for the mobile app.  What do you think?  should it be worth $8.99 as it currently sells for or would a lower price point be more enticing and sell more units?

Most old movies on the low-price rack cost more than this app.  It's QUITE worth it.

Hold off on buying your next DVD and buy the app.

Whether or not a lower price point would generate more sales and earn Ken more money is question I'm certainly not qualified to answer.

From my own personal point of view, the $8.99 or whatever was money well spent.  I now have an addition form of backup.  And it's a one time purchase. I don't regret it at all.

^ This.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Easily worth the money Invelos is charging for. It's not just a simple listing of your catalogue ... it has all kinds of cool features: barcode scanning, shake to pick, detailed cast, crew, overview, audio, subtitles. Editable notes, purchase tracking, custom categories, etc, etc. Really, it's the only app that is this comprehensive in it's category. I use it on a daily basis.

as well as what everybody else has said - this is a app which can be used by those who don't have the desktop app - and which will have most of the functionality. So those who would have bought the desktop app will only buy this instead.

The current WM version sells for $18.95. I paid that NO ISSUE.  And I would pay $18.95 for a full featured, polished Android app in a heartbeat.  Count your blessings

I find that, having the desktop version, there just isn't anything appealing to me about the official iOS app. I really don't see the need to own both versions except to be charitable. And if I'm going to donate money, I'd rather it was for new features I want, not the same features on another operating system. So I guess the price is fine. In fact, it should cost just as much as the desktop version. It's the same basic program, isn't it?

I also don't want to use my iPhone/iPad for managing my collection. That kind of process still feels like it belongs on a dektop/laptop where I have more horsepower, have one true source for my collection info, and get proper data backups. For my mobile devices, I just want a simple way to browse my collection, I want them to always have my latest collection info without syncing, and I don't want to waste space housing all that info locally. A really light-weight and easy-to-use client app that gets all my collection info from the web is the ideal solution.

Edit: Thread says iDevice, so I took that to mean iOS app. But this isn't the forum for that. Sorry if I'm not on topic. I think my opinion applies to any mobile version of DVDP though.

That may certainly be true.  For you.  But most of us like having our collections on the go.  I still use the desktop version as my main database.  Still, I find it convenient to have my collection in my pocket.  I can more easily mark that a movie has been watched, I can look at my wishlist when I'm at the store, I can share what I have with friends and should my computer and backup drive both die at the same time, I have another form of backup.  I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons to have the app.  Those are just a few that appeal to me off the top of my head.  But maybe none of those appeal to you.  And that's fine too.  You just get to save yourself $8.99.

And yes, iDevice = iOS.

I too cannot live without my collection in my pocket. That's why I've been exporting my DVDP to XML and uploading that into a website since Feb 2004. Then I revamped my site from a list format (similar to DVDP users' online pages) to a cover art grid back in 2007. And just a few months ago I enhanced it to run as a WebApp on iOS devices. But all I want from a mobile version is a simple way to view and search my collection quickly, whereever I am, and the desktop DVDP already enables that.

I know that others may like and benefit from some of the other features the official mobile app supports, but in my opinion, it's way too powerful for what a user like me cares about in a mobile movie collection app. I certainly can't speak for whether or not my needs are the minority or majority, but for anyone who just wants access to their collection, the official app is way too costly. You have to need all those other bells and whistles to really justify the price.

And that's what I think is the answer to the poll in this thread. If you want and need a full desktop application running on your iOS device, the price is a steal. If you just want mobile access to your collection, the price really shouldn't be more than $.99.
