Hi forum,

I'm new to this place and first I wanted to say hello to all of you.

Of course this post is not for spamming purposes and I want to ask some questions, which arose while I was introducing myself to contribute. Mainly they are related to the release "Alien - Die Saga" - the German low-budget version of the Alien quadrilogy. Yes, I read the contribution rules. Yes, I tried to search the forum but I got time outs on my queries. So, I hope you give me some guidance.

1) runtime: All discs in this box contain the original and an alternative version of the movie. The current profile of the box gives a total runtime of over 900 minutes adding all versions of all contained movies together. In contradiction to this the profiles of the single discs state only the length of the longer version. So, how is it handled properly? A third variation would be to give the runtime of the original release and to consider the alternative version as a feature.

2) subtitles: The discs provide subtitles for hearing-impaired people. Is this a commentary- or a other-subtitle?

3) supervisor credits: ATM the Alien profiles state the supervisor credits as the role without the "supervisor" addition. I might misunderstand the contribution rules in this point. Are they to give as the specific role ignoring the "supervisor" or are they to give as Other/Custom Role?

3) rating system: The rating system DVD profiler uses seems to depend on the EAN/UPC. My copy of "American History X" is made in U.S.A but was produced for the German market and thus uses the German rating system. Is there any possibility to change the system in the profile (American to German)?

4) minimum contribution work: It's said, that rearranging genres or studios isn't worth an update - which is totally understandable. I chose one of my first contribution because of the missing country of origin - something which bothered me and I was lucky that I found other things which could be added/improved. But what if not? When is an update worth an update?

5) errors recognized after upload: I made some corrections to the profile of my "American History X". Unfortunatelly I recognised that I made some mistakes. Actually I entered A.C.E./A.C.S. additions as "Credited As". Now I discovered that they shouldn't be entered. I already received 3 yes-votes. What's to do?

Hmm, I guess that's all for now. Further questions probably to come...

Hi there, welcome to the forums.
Everyone here will try and answer any questions you have about contributing. I'll start by trying to answer these ones.

1. The runtime should be calculated by adding the runtime of the longest version of each film. For example, my Alien boxset runs 532 mins, nowhere near the 900 you quoted.

2. We can't profile subtitles for the hard for hearing at the moment. For now, tick the language they're in.

3. Not sure what you mean about this one, could you give an example? But generally supervisors are classed as the credit they supervise.

3 (again)  The rating system is controlled by EAN and locality. If your copy of American History X was made to be sold in Germany it gets a German rating.

4. Completely up to you. A lot of people consider any correction a worthwhile update. If you think an update is worth submitting, submit it.

5. You have two options here. You can either withdraw the contribution through the website or resubmit with the corrections and this will overwrite the old one. Don't worry about the votes, they'll just get the chance to vote again.

From what I understand, it's a box set, right? Multiple movies on multiple discs? In that case, each disc gets its own profile. In those child profiles, you use the running time of the longest version of the movie on that particular disc. For the running time in the (largely empty) parent box set profile, you add all of those individual running times (longest variant of each) up.

Don't tick "Commentary" or "Other", but instead simply the language they're in. The fact that they're geared towards the hard-of-hearing is not something we specify at this point.

Not entirely sure what you mean. Could you give an example of what the credits actually say? Maybe a screenshot?

No, it does not. Instead, it primarily depends on the disc's locality.

Changing the locality certainly is possible. In the "DVD"-dropdown-menu there's a "Change Locality" option, and that'll do the trick. However, chances are that a profile for the German version of 'American History X' already exists - are you sure the profile you're working with has the exact same EAN/UPC/barcode as the one on your set?

When an update is worth an update is hard to say - to each his own. Effectively, it boils down to that anything that isn't explicitly forbidden by the rules (like a contribution that only reorders genres, for instance) will be considered as "worth it" by someone. And even things like reordering genres is allowed - as long as it's part of a "wider" update...

Two options: either withdraw the contribution (go here, click on the title, and an option to withdraw will become visible), or simply resubmit the same profile - now without those A.C.E./A.C.S. additions. As long as the previous contribution hasn't been processed yet (for updates to existing profiles, this usually takes about a week) your new contribution will overwrite the previous one.

I think I understand your question.  Let's say you have a credit of 'Visual Effects Supervisor'.  Profiler does not have that exact credit so you simply check the Visual Effects box.  You can, if you so desire, enter the actual role into the custom role field, but that won't get contributed.  Some of us are hoping that this will change in the future but, for the time being, you just get the 'generic' role.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Thanks for your instant replies, which cleared up my problems. TheMadMartian guessed correctly what I was trying to ask. ^^

About the locality problem: The profile I had in my collection had an Austrian locality. I don't know anything about their rating system there but the covers show the German rating symbol. There came my misunderstanding from. I know exchanged the profiles so I don't mess up anything.
