Was working on some stuff for my local today on this film, and had to look-up a credit with the CLT. I see the film's title is listed multiple ways.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial

I know the third option is incorrect. We don't use hyphens to separate titles unless they're specifically present on the cover, but does this title get a colon to separate E.T. and The Extra-Terrestrial?

Colons are designated in the rules to separate episode descriptors. The Extra-Terrestrial in the title isn't an episode descriptor however, and I have yet to see it present on any covers. I'm thinking that the title I have in my local of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is correct.

For reference sake, the credit block on the back has "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" and here's a screen grab of the title credits:

And on the flipside, IMDB (I know I know, we don't use IMDB, just presenting another side) has the title listed as E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

I would go for option one because it's no episode descriptor and the colon (hyphen or whatever) isn't used anywhere on the cover of my copy or in the actual film credits.

FYI: According to the rules in case a hyphen precedes an episode descriptor it has to be a colon.

Option 2. The separation makes it clear these are different clauses, which we separate with a colon.

This is all good if it's the case, but I have to ask, where is this stated?

In the Title section of the rules, I see nothing that states that's what we do in a case like this. Where does it mention we separate a title like this (that some may or may not feel is clear that they are different clauses) with a colon?

(Just in case anyone thinks differently, I'm not being an a** and trying to get my way just because I may disagree, I'm just honestly asking a question!  )

I have never done it that way, and am also curious as to where this is in the rules.

In the line of A.I. Artificial Intelligence, I would go with option 1.

That's how we do it with every other movie in a title: subtitle format. See Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns, Batman: The Movie, Blood: The Last Vampire and so on.

I guess I don't see it as a subtitle. Only the title repeated, un-abbreivated.

A subtitle is often an explanatory note of the title.

I just remembered I had trouble entering this. Is it:

MIB: Men in Black
or just

17 vs. 13 as of right now.

We're never going to get closer to a coherent database, are we?
