How long do people think this DVD should be recorded as lasting for?

I’m presently auditing a DVD that isn’t in the database at all.  The sleeve says it’s running time is 100 minutes (approximately) long.

However, the main feature lasts 85 minutes and 46 seconds (= 86 minutes).

However, the actually feature ends at about 83 minutes and 52 seconds (= 84 minutes), to be followed by a period of nearly 2 minutes of nothing.  (I’ve estimated the exact feature end time here, as it fades to black and silence over a period of a few seconds).

However, at the end of the 85 minutes and 46 seconds, the DVD goes straight into a series of interviews that aren’t mentioned on the sleeve or accessible by the menus, which last 3 minutes 28 seconds (= 3 minutes).  These don't extend the ongoing run time as shown on my DVD player, so don't appear to be part of the main feature.

So what should I record it's Run Time as?

Thoughts, opinions and suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The DVD is Stiff Little Fingers: At the Edge Live and Kickin' (EAN 636551522175).

Paul

If there's absolutely no film-related content after 83:52, no "exit music" either, and the remaining period of black/silence only serves as some kind of a buffer between the film and an easter egg, then I'd use 84 minutes as the film's running time.

There is indeed nothing but darkness and silence for two minutes or so; I sat through it all!

I'm going to have to say 86 minutes.  Even though there's nothing that follows that, if that last chapter doesn't end until 85:46, who's to say those remaining two minutes weren't intended by the filmmaker?

That's an interesting point. How was it originally shown/intent?

I honestly don't care what the filmmaker intended.  All I care about is how long the actual feature is.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I think it was never available in any other format or released anyway except as a DVD.  For viewing it, I'd have to say it appears to have the same function as a long gap on a CD has after the 'last' track, before a hidden track.  I've a lot of CDs like this and this would appear to be a DVD version of the same thing.

I like the 84 minute choice.  That's how much time I need to invest.

Still, most people would see the length on their DVD player and just enter that.

The fact that this isn't in the database yet tells me that you can safely pick whatever makes sense to you and no one is likely to complain all that much.

I have another example for that: The movie Who killed the Electric Car (5035822497030, Locality GB) has a run time of 85 minutes and after these 85 minutes the DVD switches back to the main menu - however there are about 4 extra minutes on the timer because someone put the first 4 minutes of the movie after the end credits.

I'd say 84 minutes (unless John Cage did the score).

Sometimes this happens to accommodate a commentary track where they kept talking after the credits.

I understand that most people will just use the time feature of their player to measure the length and therefore not catch this oddity.

I would go with 84 minutes and then add the interviews as Easter Eggs, since they seem not mentioned elsewhere.

There is no commentary track in this case.

What actually happens is that the timer on my DVD Player continues to count on until it reaches 85 minutes and 46 seconds; then it (with no intervention) goes straight into the interviews and the timer just reads “Root” and doesn’t give any sort of timing during this section.  I only know how long the interviews last as there’s a timer that appears as part of the picture from what appears to be the video camera used to shoot the interviews.  Same thing with Windows Media player, no time is actually displayed in the software, just in the picture itself.

I'm going with 86 minutes. Even though the last two minutes are only black, technically it is encoded in the file, which is usually what I go by. Otherwise you leave the door open for various kinds of interpretation. So basically, I go with what is hardcoded on the disc.

I would enter whatever the play count on my player tells me, but I don't mind either way.
