I was doing a filter search (to find and remove any Inc, Ltd, etc) and was reminded of the variation of Lionsgate and Lions Gate. Which is it? Has the studio printed it both ways? I'm sure this has come up before but wasn't sure what people's thoughts were.

On the same studio but different subject, what about Lionsgate Home Entertainment or Lions Gate Home Entertainment? I'm fairly certain I have not come across that on the back covers for the Media Company but perhaps it was on the disc itself? For instance, although Warner Home Video handles New Line's releases, New Line Home Entertainment does not appear on the back cover but sometimes is on the disc itself when it starts playing.

In the end, I'm just trying to figure out some sort of consistency with Lionsgate vs. Lions Gate as we currently have:

Lionsgate
Lions Gate

Lionsgate Entertainment
Lions Gate Entertainment

Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Lions Gate Home Entertainment

Lionsgate Films
Lions Gate Films

Lionsgate Television
Lions Gate Television

Edit: Looking at a few back cover scans, the copyright at the bottom on them say Lions Gate Entertainment

It would be helpful if they themselves could decide. Their website contains references to both "Lionsgate" and "Lions Gate Entertainment".

Looking at my back covers I see:
8 Lions Gate Home Entertainment (logo)
9 Lions Gate Entertainment (copyright)
6 Lionsgate (logo and address)
1 Lions Gate Films (production company)
4 Lions Gate Films (copyright)

From what I have been able to gather, it is 'Lionsgate' everywhere except the coporate name.  The corporate name, which is the name we use in the MC field, is 'Lions Gate Entertainment'.  I am not sure why they did it that way, but that is how it is...at least, that is how it is based on my research.

As a side not, prior to, I believe 2006, they did, on a few occasions, use Lions Gate Films, but it wasn't the norm.  For the most part, they just list 'Lionsgate'.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

No, you're absolutly correct, the legal name of the company was "Lions Gate Films, Inc." (LGF); they identified themselves as "Lions Gate Films" in the main title credits (e.g. "Lions Gate Films presents"), and as "Lions Gate Home Entertainment" on the DVDs (often as spelled out logo).

At some point, after they bought Trimark and Artisan, they turned "Lions Gate Films, Inc." into a subsidiary of "Lions Gate Entertainment Corp." (today's parent company), but kept using the LGF and LGHE names.

End of 2005 they announced their rebranding to "Lionsgate" (effective 2006), introducing the still used one-word LIONSGATE logo. I've found a short announcement from that period.
Since then movies open either with the new Lionsgate logo, or with the text "Lionsgate presents" – they also write of themselves as "Lionsgate" in the corporate section of their website. The rebranding caused IMO one very ugly problem: they don't use separate names for their divisions anymore. Instead of "Lions Gate Home Entertainment" they print only the one-word logo on the DVD/BD cover, and they close their TV series with the same one-word logo instead of the former "Lions Gate Television".

To come back to Movieman's list, there are a few option we can clearly identify as incorrect, those would be:

* Lions Gate (never used, it can be "Lions Gate Films" or "Lions Gate Entertainment", otherwise it's incomplete)
* Lionsgate Entertainment (never used, the legal name of the parent company remains "Lions Gate Entertainment")
* Lionsgate Films (never used, it's either pre-2006 "Lions Gate Films" or post-2006 "Lionsgate")

In most cases correct should be:
* Lions Gate Films (all pre-2005 movies)
* Lions Gate Home Entertainment (all pre-2005 Home Ent. releases)
* Lions Gate Television (all pre-2005 TV productions)

* Lionsgate (all post-2006 movies)

Very problematic are "Lionsgate Home Entertainment" and "Lionsgate Television", as Lionsgate doesen't make a publicly identifiable difference between it's divisions anymore – they use always the same logo. To be precise, this is the same case as Paramount and Universal with their unspecific one-word logo. At least Universal finally uses the division name "Universal Studios Home Entertainment" under the logo, but older releases don't.

And "Lions Gate Entertainment" again would be the same case as "Warner Bros. Entertainment" (the legal entity of "Warner Bros. Pictures" and the parent company of "Warner Home Video") or "Universal Studios" (legal entity of "Universal Pictures" and "Universal Studios Home Entertainment").

Personally, in my local Db I use "Lionsgate Home Entertainment" and "Lionsgate Television", but I don't think it's contributable – at least not for now. I'm not sure how the Paramount/Universal problem was solved, as we do not enter the incomplete name from the logo, but the HE or TV division name...

You know what I would like to see?

A "Credited As" feature for studios.

Let's face it, we know all of these are the same company/studio.  Just like we know that Twentieth Century Fox and Twentieth Century-Fox are the same.  But there are folks who want to see the exact way the credit is listed transcribed.  That's fine, and completely understandable.  But it would be nice if all the films by the same company could be grouped together for filtering purposes with a "Credited As" feature to record the spelling variation.  We could certainly come up with a rule for which to use (either "most credited form" or "most recent variation" or something).
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
