I have a question about the use of the "Story by" credit in the online database.

Let's take a real world example from a film I'm currently auditing.  Here are the actual writing credits that appear onscreen:

Screen Play by
ARTHUR SHEEKMAN

Adaptation by
ARTHUR SHEEKMAN and N. RICHARD NASH

Story by
FRANK BUTLER

It seems apparent to me that the screenplay is "based on" Frank Butler's story, by virtue of the story having been adapted prior to being turned into a screenplay.  In the case where an adaptation of a story is used as the basis for a screenplay, isn't that the same thing as saying the screenplay is "based on" the story?  The notes in the credit table even say "Adapted from another medium." for the OMB credit.

So first, can the presence of an Adapted by/Adaptation by credit transform Story by into OMB, and second, which of these would be correct for an online contribution of the above credits?

Arthur Sheekman: Screenwriter
Frank Butler: Story by

or

Arthur Sheekman: Screenwriter
Arthur Sheekman: Original Material by
N. Richard Nash: Original Material by
Frank Butler: Original Material by

or

Arthur Sheekman: Screenwriter
Frank Butler: Original Material by

IMO, the adaptation credit has no bearing on how the others are recorded. Story by = Story by.

Under the original rule where OMB roles were blank, I contend that Adaptation by was acceptable as OMB. As OMB's roles are currently in the chart (Original Material By, Based on [anything] By), it's not an acceptable role. There's a writing credit proposal that will once and for all justify Adapted by as an OMB role, but it's been sitting there for many months now.

At this time:

Arthur Sheekman: Screenwriter
Frank Butler: Story by

James got to it before me.

I agree with his assessment

So do I.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I was pretty sure this would be the answer I'd get, and that's essentially how I've entered it into my local DB:

Arthur Sheekman: Screenwriter [Screen Play by]
Arthur Sheekman: Other [Adaptation by]
N. Richard Nash: Other [Adaptation by]
Frank Butler: Story by

Thanks for the input.

It should be noted that the above thread was written before the rules chart was changed in the manner I mentioned in my first post in this thread.

Hmm, perhaps an understanding problem, but this changes nothing?!

Adapted by would never get an OMB.

The Writer/Maker of the stuff that gets adapted is the OMB. (Isn't that the reason for the original in OMB)
The person that makes an adaption is perhaps some kind of screenwriter or similar, but til now no credit we track.

Sorry, if it sounds sarcastic. (Shouldn't be insulting)

It is arguable under the former rule and not permitted by the current rule.

Ok, just to not get me wrong, this is what should be entered under the current ruling:
Arthur Sheekman: Screenwriter
Frank Butler: Story by

The provided link was just for futher information and it was absolutely correct and good, that James provided the information the rule changed in a time after this discussion.

The best solution would be for Ken to add a separate selection for "Adapted" credits.  We certainly get enough questions about them in the forum.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
