Hello

The UK Film Council is a distributor of National Lottery funding and has supported a large number of British films.  It’s often listed as a Studio in Profiles, as its logo appears on sleeves and it’s often prominently named on them and in credits.  However, my knowledge of lottery fund distributors is that they’re pretty hands off in terms of the creative aspect of what they fund.  (I deal with several lottery distributors as part of my job, although I don’t know the UK Film Council in this context.)  If this is true for the UK Film Council, then should it I wonder be named as a Studio?

It’s a major funder certainly but if my assumption is true then it’s unlikely to have any sort of significant role in the creative aspects of a film.  With this in mind, is it actually either a Theatrical Release Studio or a Production Company, which it would need to be to be listed as a Studio.  My knowledge of how the film industry works isn’t good enough for me to make an informed decision on this, so I’d be interested to hear what other people think.

Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

I think the issue of separating the studios into three groups - studio(s) that distributes theatrically, studio(s) that actually makes the film, and studio(s) that provide money - is a worthy thought, but ultimately would not be possible.  That is because too many people are like you and myself as well, when you said "My knowledge of how the film industry works isn’t good enough for me to make an informed decision on this."  I know I don't have a clear way of knowing which named entity is one that simply provided money rather than an actual production company.  I believe this is why the general understanding is to simply enter the studios in the order they appear on screen (distributor first, of course).
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Hello.

I thought I'd attempt to answer my own question and e-mailed the UK Film Council to find out what it considers itself to be.  I asked; “Does the UK Film Council consider itself to be either a film production company or a theatrical release studio?”

Its reply was (in under 24 hours which I thought was pretty good); “To clarify, we are neither a film production company or a theatrical release studio, rather primarily a film funding organisation. We are relatively involved in both production and theatrical release, but as the funders of either, rather than producers or distributers. The UK Film Council, aside from funding film development and production, also has departments dealing with inward investment, certification, co-production, film exports, statistics, distribution and exhibition, MEDIA Desk UK, industry relations and film partnerships across the UK.”

This suggests pretty clearly (to me anyway), that it should not be included as a Studio for any DVDs.

What a shame the UK Government has just decided to abolish it!  Bad decision, (in my admittedly uninformed opinion).
