For DVD Profiler purposes, is there a difference between "From a Story by" and "Based on a Story by"?

"From a Story by" is not specifically listed in the credits table, but it seems to me that these two credits are equivalent, and in Profiler that both should receive an OMB credit.

Here is what the Writer's Guild of America Screen Credits Manual has to say on these two credits (as if it matters):

...In such cases, the author of the source material may be given credit that specifies the form in which such material was acquired -- for instance, "From a Play by," "From a Novel by," "From a Saturday Evening Post Story by," "From a Series of Articles by," "Based on a Story by," etc.

There is a contribution proposing a change in credit from OMB to Story by, and the onscreen credit is "From the Saturday Evening Post Story by".  I am inclined to vote no.  What say ye all?

Am I wrong?  Does it matter?  Shall I just vote neutral as usual?

You should indeed vote no.  The "Story by" credit is for person/persons who have done a story treatment directly for the screen.  For a story originally published in The Saturday Evening Post, that is Original Material By.

Agree with Danae Cassandra. There's a proposal in the rules committee forum that will clarify this if it's ever implemented.

You are correct to vote no.

It was based upon that story, but that story was not written for the screen.

So I agree with Danae and James.

Thanks.  That's what I was thinking, but I was just checking first.

A little late to the party, but I agree, you should vote 'no'.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.
