However, Asians who have also taken on Westernized name will typically put their Western name or convert their Asian name to the middle name slot. You can't easily parse 3 syllable Asian names without knowing what their family name is (particularly with Chinese names because there are far too many surnames). In your example, Sai Tang is the given name and should not be split up. Yu is the family name. IMO, it should be parsed Sai Tang//Yu, but there has been no concrete ruling by Ken or Gerry as to how it should be parsed. | | Posted: | | | |  I know nothing of Asian name parsing, but this thread just reminded me of a beautiful 3-word-combo: Single Name Field (at least as a locally customised feature so that whatever parsing variant you download from online, it can be handled as single name field in your local database - if such is possible to program) Getting database correct regarding Asian name parsing is next to impossible, if users are to know family histories of actors and crew. And current simple solution of Name1 / Name 2->n / Name n+1 (=first space separated word to first name field, last space separated word to the last name field, and everything else in the middle name field) means of course that in many cases 1. name field doesn't contain the entire first name, and 3. name field doesn't contain the entire family name. It's just a preference used by some users, while some other users have an entirely different preference. Per the rules, none is more valid than the other, and so we're stuck with a complete and total mess. I honestly don't understand why Invelos doesn't address this.  |

You are of course correct. Besides, we already have to use cultural interpretation even with that "simple solution" what with all the de, da, von, van, van't, van der, von der, della, di, af...
