This is how the Credits look on the screen:

Visual Effects by RISING SUN PICTURES

Opening Sequence Visual Effects yU + co.
Creative Designer GARSON YU
Designer/Animators MARTIN SURYA
                              DAVID YAN

Should Garson Yu, Martin Surya  and David Yan get a Visual Effects Credit?

I am not certain of the first artist because of the addition of the word Creative in front of Designer.

The last two I am certain (I think!) that they should. My rationale is that they should be treated the same way we do if someone gets a Crew Credit that reads Makeup/Hair.

What do you think?

As was once a part of the rules

When in doubt, leave it out.

I don't think they qualify at this time though they probably should

While we do track the company in a divider, we only do so when the individual credits match the crew chart.  Since none of them do, I would not give them a credit.

We list more than Supervisors per the rules:

"Individual Credits:
Visual/Digital/Special/Special Visual Effects, including Designer, Supervisor, and Director,
Special Photographic Effects"

I can see Garson Yu not getting the credit since his role is listed as Creative Designer, which is not listed.

But, why wouldn't Martin Surya  and David Yan get a Visual Effects Credit? The are listed as Designer/Animator.

Please explain because I don't understand why they wouldn't.

If Joe Blow is listed as Makeup/Hair they would get a Makeup Artist credit. I do not see how Designer/Animator is any different.

Kathy:.

I should have been clearer, sorry. I would have no problem with the Designer/Animator based on the data provided, but the Creative Designer, while I might be inclined to include him lopcally under other and custom Role (which I use for virtually all Crew now), and I think the Role should probably be added, at this time it does not qualify.

Were i submitting the credits i would not include Surya & Tan.  If i'm looking at the credits and see what is an obviously superior (supervisory) role but cannot add it, i see no point in adding the names of subordinates.

The subordinates without the supervisors have no value (to me).

I agree.

I wouldn't credit the Creative Designer, but I would the other two Designers.

The difference is that 'Makeup', on its own, is listed in the crew chart.  'Designer' is not.  While the company did do the visual effects, neither Surya nor Yan are credited as Visual Effects Designer.  For all we know, they designed then animated the animation.  Just my opinion, of course.

I Think I'm a little confused...

Is the part, bolded by me, a credit for a company that did the Opening sequences or a sub section for Rising Sun pictures.

If it is it's own company credit, then I would not include any of them.  If they are a employees of Rising Sun, then You could make an arguement for
Creative Designer GARSON YU
Designer/Animators MARTIN SURYA
                              DAVID YAN

But I personally would only hold them locally.

CharlieM, I have no way of knowing for sure. But, the way the spacing is I think all three are a subset of Rising Sun Pictures. Of course, since I am only guessing I could very well be wrong.

Thank you everyone for your input. I have decided to err on the side of caution and will withdraw these three Crew members from the contribution.

I've only seen this film on TV so may be totally wrong, but the way I would interpret the credits is that Rising Sun Pictures created the VFX for the film, but Yu + Co. (Garson Yu's company) created the VFX for the opening sequence.

Yu + Co. is not a subsidiary of Rising Sun Pictures, however there is the possibility that Rising Sun sub-contracted the opening sequence out to Yu + Co.

Whether any of this helps you decide to credit them or not is a different matter completely!
