So I'm Still Confused About How to Enter "Nested" Group Dividers...

I'm doing an audit for the Canadian locality profile of The Truman Show.

Here's a couple of screen shots of the cast credits:

How exactly do I enter these credits since nesting isn't an available option? Would I just use group dividers for all and let it fall the way it falls? That would cut off Truman's World at Truman's Neighbors though. And a group divider for The Viewers would be useless as it would end directly afterwards when a new group divider is used for Bar Waitresses. Episode dividers aren't allowed as per the rules... Totally confused. Any help would be muchly appreciated!

Locally i'd use Episode dividers. For the DB using Group dividers may be the only option.

I think there was a thread recently which optioned to using [Christof's World - Control Room Director's] as an option Ken OKéd. Personally i'm not a fan of this option though. Than i'd just prefer to use Group dividers for the main header and just repeat the role for the actor's. Although that is not allowed either.

As long as we don't have the ability to have nested dividers - which we should get ASAP! - this is what I prefer as well.

In the meantime, Ken has "okayed" both using group dividers for everything, and creating something like "Truman's World - Ron and Don". There is also no indication that those are the only two options, so Paul's suggestion may very well be equally valid. That fact that there are multiple ways of dealing with this that are apparently all okay, leaves us an inconsistent mess in the database, and results in a big hurdle whenever your local way of handling (locally, I do strive for consistency) differs from how it's done in the on-line version: either we ping-pong between different methods, or you're virtually cut off from contributing any more cast changes to that particular profile. As such, this really needs to be addressed.

I agree... I would love to see Ken settle on just one way so everyone is on the same page. I personally prefer Ken's suggestion as I think it just looks better.

[Christof's World - Control Room Director's]

but that is just me.

I guess the way to do it, per Ken's suggestion would be something like this:

Truman's World
- credits
Truman's World - Ron and Don
- credits
Truman's World
- credits
Truman's World - Truman's Neighbors
- credits

repeat ad nauseum

While it doesn't reflect the credits properly, if you don't repeat the initial header it won't show for those credits below the secondary heading.

Tim is so very right.  We need those nesting dividers ASAP!  This is an excellent example of why.

At least if we could use episode dividers for the 'main' heading we wouldn't have to repeat the heading after the secondary heading.  But that is not the way we're supposed to do it.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

This is such a messy solution, and the longer we go without nested dividers, the more profiles will need to be redone when we do get them. Can't believe Ken didn't think about this when he added group dividers

Even if he didn't think about it himself - I actually warned him about it, because I saw this coming from miles away. When he "okayed" two alternative methods of handling (back when we were still in beta), I replied to him (halfway down this page):

Ideally, there really shouldn't be "alternative" methods of handling for these matters. There really needs to be a consistent approach to this, rather than different methods where we're stuck with the dreaded "first one in wins" principle, making it virtually impossible to make a simple cast correction when you happened to choose for the "alternative" method to what is currently listed in the online profile.

Ken immediately answered with:
Quote:
The above isn't an addition to the rules.  The alternatives are here for you folks to talk about.

So this exact problem was outlined pretty clearly even before 3.6 with these new group dividers was released, and Ken was certainly aware of it. After the above exchange, we then proceeded to talk about it, like Ken suggested, but things went sour, the thread was locked, nothing ever happened, and now, three months after the release of 3.6 and after several threads asking for clarification on the matter, we're still stuck with the exact same problem...

I don't think anybody saw this situation coming.  I know I didn't, so I can't blame Ken for not seeing it.  Once the problem was discovered, however, a fix should have been instituted almost immediately.  It wasn't, and still hasn't, and that is what bugs me...I am guessing that is what bugs most people.

That being said, for my local, I use episode dividers for the main heading and group dividers for the rest.  For me, that is the only option that looks right...and, for the record, I keep these cast lists to myself.  I refuse to contribute something that doesn't work.

I submitted the profile minus the cast. Ended up not even touching the cast actually. It's just too messy at the current moment, and I'd rather not have to lock down the profile and not be able to accept any changes when it comes to the cast in case of an update if I did it with episode dividers (which looks like the best solution to me at the moment).

I'll wait until a fix is implemented. Hopefully that comes rather soon because this really is a fairly large inconvenience as far as profiling the cast is concerned.

Thanks for all the responses though guys. Muchly appreciated!

The whole Group Divider thing is a total mess, and the rule gives precious little guidance to someone wanting to do a profile.  I did an audit on the remake of THE CRAZIES last week and when I got to the visual effects crew I just threw up my hands since I couldn't tell what the heck Ken wants us to do with these things.  Apparently the old rules about no companies are gone, so all these hundreds of credits come in under the Group Divider?  That's just ridiculous and it's too damned much work.
