See below - my current 'Rushmore' profile has the actor listed as "J. J. Stonebreaker" (with a space), and there's now a contribution up suggesting to change it to "J. J. Stonebreaker [J.J. Stonebreaker]". I know that this is indeed how we're supposed to deal with occasions where the credits don't show a space (per Ken here), but I'm in doubt over what I'm actually seeing here. Is there a space on-screen or not?

It looks like an obvious space to me.

Well, at least I must have thought the same the last time I audited this, but judging from the current voting balance on this pending contribution (fifteen in favour of the change, not a single person against it), I'm not so sure anymore.

This is hard to see. But when you look close then there is more space between 'J.' and 'Stonebraker' than between 'J.' and 'J.'. So I think the contributor is right, he's is credited as J.J. Stonebraker.

Compared to Mrs. Blume it looks like no space was intended. But who knows, and who cares.

I hate everyone who uses initials for a name, period.

This is clear case of there is clearly more space between the J's than say the D and o of Donny below it. There is also clearly less space than the y and C of Donny below as well. Either way is right from that screen, just don't start arguing back and forth about one or the other.

I hate when they don't commit.  While there is a space, it isn't a full space like there is between all the other names, so it could go either way.

In my eyes it also looks it has a Space between, but a much smaller than the normal space. The last weeks there was another example in a thread that looked similar. I hate them doing this, but I won't care which way it is entered.

How is the parsing now and after the contribution?

Just check Ken's explanation in the link I provided: it's J./J./Stonebraker either way. This is just about the "credited as" field, which doesn't have parsing.

The space seems to be a bit wider than between the other capital letters, so probably it's J./J./, but with the filter, what does it actually matter??
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

If I'm in doubt about the space (and that one does seem to be a little halfway as the Martain has said) I always just leave out the credited as. As Silence_of_Lambs said, does it really matter that much anyway with the filter.

I wouldn't vote no to a credited as contribution on it though I suppose. It really kind of is a tricky one. At least to my eyes.

Pardon me for saying so, but does really it matter?

And if so, why?

Personally, I would simply rather the rules stated that for persons that list their names as initials, to enter them as X./X. whether or not the credits give them a space.  After all, the filter will enter them that way no matter what, so I see absolutely no point in entering it as X. X. [X.X.].  What does it achieve?

(Because of my feelings on the matter, I always vote neutral to these sorts of contributions)

There are people who want the profile credits to match the film credits.  This allows them to have what they want while, at the same time, setting a standard.  This is the same thing as the Jr/Sr Credited As filter.

True, but as you have noted before, modern type setting allows for different wide spaces. Therefore we don't deal with space vs. no space alone and can't completely simulate the graphical aspects of the credits. IMO, we should completely standardise initials without using credited as. The same would be true for Jr., Sr. What I really want to know is which actor played which role in what movie and not what spacing, punctuation has been used.

I tried to provide for all contingencies, for the cited examples also involved parsing.

So:

I would change Stonebreaker to Stonebraker.

I wouldn't vote against the contribution, there obviously is a space, I think spaces of different width are possible in text or font design. I wouldn't have contributed it.
