I came across Recording Engineer yesterday and wondered under the current rules would this role get a sound credit?

Corne is correct, why is it so hard to just follow what the Rule says. In fact, there even used to be a statement somewhere in the rules, that said basically if in doubt leave it out, it may still be there.

Under the current rules, no.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

It's still there:

For each category, include only those people credited with the roles listed in the "Role" and "Credited As" columns. If someone is not credited with one of these roles (or direct translations of these roles), do not include them in the Crew section.

I think there were some exceptions for British crew roles but I don't see it in the rules, maybe I was dreaming.

No that's not allowed by the rules. Recording Engineer isn't in the role table nor in the credited as role table.

It's hard to follow since all movies have different wordings.
I've almost slipped a few times myself recently, confusing dubbing mixers with dubbing engineers, and seen other profiles with re-recordists (not mixers) contributed.

Which shows you why I steer clear of crew credits. I have tried a few time to get the hang of it... but in the end I just give up on them.

Not hard at all, big daddy. Quetion, is it in the list...yes, proceed and Contribute. No....STOP do not Contribute. Not hard. Recording Engineer is NOT in the list...STOP do not Contribute. See how easy that is.

You're missing a very important step. See role, get confused. It looks like the new contributable role, but feels slightly off. Re-check rules grid and find other wording, then don't contribute. Go back, find another one, repeat. I've strated having 3 invelos pages open when working on an audit.
1 for common name look up
2 for rules chart
3 to search for BY's
plus imdb to look for bunk uncredited, credited as I never would've known of, and/or fill in pictures of cast menbers I don't have yet (last headshot thing didn't work so well for me, so I'll make my own with all the nudity I want!). Making it difficult.
