I got my copy of "Funny Girl" brand new, oversealed from Amazon Back in March (trivia, ASIN: B00005O3VD) and it has the following UPC, already in the database: 043396-030893.

The second database entry for "Funny Girl" is by DiscID, which is the same DiscID for the UPC code above:

95210AE86E69FAE3 - FUNNY_GIRL_DVD_VIDEO

My own copy matches the artwork for the entry by DiscID (except that entry's artwork has no space for a UPC code on the usual back cover top-right location).

My own copy has a different DiscID from either of the above:

0CD35E1A7A574BDE [FUNNY_GIRL_DVD_VIDEO]

So I could submit a database entry under that DiscID, except that it would look dorky with a UPC code on the back scan already matching something in the database ...

I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but any links to threads where this has been hashed out would be great, or link to a spot in the specific discussion guidelines would be appreciated.

I've reviewed the contribution guidelines and have several questions on this.

How can you tell if the difference is because someone else has the slip cover and you don't?

If the art is "just plain different", what determines who gets dibs on the UPC?

Earliest submission?

Art associated with earliest DVD release date?

What I usually do with those "ReRelease"-discs (under old UPC) is the following:

Make all disc and package related changes for my local database only.
Review the Cast and Crew data for necessary changes.

When finished I submit:
Cast and Crew data
New DiscID (in the contribution notes: "Additional DiscID for database purposes")

I wouldn't submit a rerelease under DiscID, because I think that those should be reserved to possible boxset releases. But since it isn't explicitly forbidden by the rules, it might be perfectly OK for others to do so.
