Have a contribution running right now ( JC Superstar 1973)) and as the opening credits show Tim Rice wrote the Lyrics, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the (sheet) music and  Andre Previn listed as Conducted by (Theme by ),, i.e. Previn's orchestral performed the music for the film ( I actually perfer  the record vinyl album of that time (1970)  was performed by City of London Ensemble) .
My notes say: Andre Previn did the orchestration -credits show- 'music conducted by' ( Andre Previn)  ( or Theme By )..
is this not correct?  what would Theme By mean?  It's funny how for the crew credits we  have for most noteworthy credits  but not the Orchestra that played on the film if documented??

All our music credits are writing credits, not performer or conductor credits.  Theme by is for the person that wrote the theme.

that's what I was confused on- was the wording Theme by..  Wouldn't 'theme by' the same as music by?  There are some great musical orchestras such as London Philharmonic etc that would greatly be enhanced by me and I'm sure others, that should be listed in crew.
The music conductor stands in front of that 'timing ' screen to get just the right pitch from his 'crew of musicians' rather than the music in some other cases would be just straight to film editing from a prerecorded source would not be a satisfactory theme by to me ..
Perhaps this should be added in the Feature requests ..

+1

Nothing else.  We have three music credits:

Composer - wrote the entire score.
Theme  - wrote the theme, but not the score.  Think the opening of Star Wars or Star Trek.
Song Writer - wrote an original song used in the film.

No.  Theme by was requested specifically because the two are different.  Take Star Trek: The Motion Picture as an example.  The original theme, written for the original series and used in all the films, was written by Alexander Courage.  The score, however, was written by Jerry Goldsmith.

If I remember correctly, it was Star Trek that caused the addition of the 'Theme By' credit.  Under the old system, Alexander Courage could not be listed.  Even though his music was used, and it was as iconic as the Enterpise herself, because it wasn't original to the film, it had to be left out.

Right, it's pretty common in TV shows for the main theme to be written by a different person who does the actual scoring of the show itself.
