Panels are a new item in reports that deserve a little explanation.  We're trying out Camtasia and have put together a brief demo of how to use panels here.

Nicely done. My only criticism would be to not have Camtasia record the sound (in this case the clicks)  You have the accented cursor to show the pick point, no need for the click. There was one point where it kept clicking and you couldn't see anything being picked. A bit distracting.

Curious - What do you see the panels being used for? I'm having a hard time picturing a good use for them.

EDIT: More of these type training sessions would be nice to see as well

EDIT 2: Just watched it again and definitely think it would be just fine (if not better) without the sound.

Read my posting on how to create a report with DVD and Blu-ray region codes.  That makes extensive use of panels.  Without panels, there is nothing within DVDP that allows for the correct displaying of region codes.

Blu-ray is easy.  The DVD region codes are the ones that suck.

I provide a PDF that shows graphically how the panels were laid out.

In this same reports forum you'll see the creating DVD and Blu-ray region report title.  In there is the link to the intitial thread posting and in there is a link to the zip file containing all kinds of goodies.

I never print reports.

Sorry, didn't know there was a "Today's Active Topics."  I was wondering how you could have missed the posting.  I'll keep that in mind for the next time I need to do something like that again.

I've not personally checked out his tutorial has be provided brain thinking pointers over in the beta section as to panels and how they are nestable (is that a word?).  That immediately told me "AND" conditional statements.  Being the programmer than I am, working with "AND" and "OR" if statements just come naturally, so the pieces fell into place.

I think of the report generator this way, up until version 3.6, it has only been a massive "OR" if statement.  And depending on how you made the panel, you were able to have prioritized "OR" statements, where an opaque panel, or image in a panel, masked what was underneath it.  Now that cascading exists, the "AND" statement has been added to report building.  That adds a lot of poternial power to the reports.

All we need now is the ability to import report building blocks.  For example, the section of the report that contains the Blu-ray and DVD region codes can be saved as a building block, along with any images that are used.  And if the whole thing were within its own panel, the building block could be imported into a user's personal report and moved wherever it is needed.  AFAIK, this "building block" feature doesn't exist and if it doesn't. I need to submit that as a feature request.

Really?  I seldom do it myself.  By filtering, the report can be selective.

But, the point is that you don't have to "print" to paper.  You can "print" to a PDF that you can give to whomever you want.

You can use copy/paste to bring over an item, which can be a panel containing multiple items. Nesting is also supported via copy/paste.

That would mean opening for editing report_A.  Selecting the elements and doing a copy.  Closing report_A and opening report_B and then pasting.  If per chance, you wanted something else from report_A, or say report_B, you now have to save report_B and then reopen report_A, or report_C.  I hope you see where I am going, i.e., it is cumbersome.

If instead there was a File->Import->Building Block capability, the user could have previously downloaded report building blocks that others submitted (dpb extension) that would now be available for importing into the report.

So, I gather this means I should submit as a new feature request, which I will do.
