OK, I figured out how to do it ... sorta.  You can get sub-windows to "dock" one at a time.  Each one takes up much more space than you initially want, but when you dock the subsequent sub-windows, you can (with a bunch of fiddling) get everything as you want it ...

I knew there had to be a way ...
