Editions

Quoting Silence_of_Lambs:
Quote:
I currently seem to have a minor problem with understanding the rules would you all please help me.

Title "A" has two releases with two EANs. One release has one disc the other has two discs.
Sadly except for the EAN they are practically indistinguishable. Nowhere on the cover does it say either "2-Disc" or (for the other release) "Single Disc" Edition.

The rules say:
Quote:
It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title.

The way I understand the rules if the desired "Edition" doesn't show up in the pull-down menu the edition to be entered has to be taken from cover (back/front or spine). If there's nothing to be found the edition field has to be left empty.

Am I wrong?

Statement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Edition helps distinguish between different releases, but it does not bear the full responsibility of that differentiation.  Per the rule, use the built-in editions when applicable, but tread lightly when stepping out of those choices.  When considering non-standard edition text, make sure it both:

- Help to differentiate versions - AND-
- Is prominently displayed on the front cover.

Any other interpretation of this rule starts us down the path to things like "Avatar: The Slightly Taller Version with the Blue Sticker"

(For  completeness):
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
I could be flexible on the "front" portion.  Thoughts?

Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Note that the condition for prominent front cover display applies only to non-standard editions (those not included in the program's drop-down):

I have a few where the use of the term 'special edition' is only listed in the overview, so I don't care for the change either.

The 'prominent' condition applies in no way to those titles.  'Special Edition' is a built-in edition entry.

And what about when it isn't in the drop-down menu... but only on the back cover?

Yes, that is the question at hand.

Parsing in the online contribution system

Statement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Parsing is no longer considered or displayed in the online contribution system.

For context:
Quoting GreyHulk (shortened):
Quote:
Can we not lose the colour change though? I found it easier when the Actor was one colour (or three) and the Role was another.
...

Quoting tweeter (shortened):
Quote:

...
1) I note a bug: the Credited As name is showing as the As Credited name also
Quote:
what i see now is

Nicolas Coppola [Nicolas Coppola]

which should be

Nicholas Cage [Nicolas Coppola]

This shows as the existing and submitted name, neither of which are part of the change i submitted.
...

Statement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Added a differentiation for role/name, and corrected the CreditedAs display.

For context:
Quoting hal9g:
Quote:
Ken,

When I  download a new profile which contains a name which is not in my local database, will it parse that name automatically using 1/2/3 for 3-part names?

Statement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
No, it will use whatever was uploaded, after which you can change it locally.

Quoted posts from Ken on

page 8

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just as addition (from page 8):
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
I don't want to give the impression that this was a simple switch to flip.  Support for this was added into the program a few months ago, and more time was needed for the version to propagate.  Before that change, the online change would have resulted in destroyed local parsing.  Not that it couldn't have been faster.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the official announcement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
We've modified the contribution system so that it no longer considers first/middle/last parsing changes as a change to the profile.  For example:

Sara/Jane/Walker is now considered the same as Sara//Jane Walker. These will not display as changes, and will also no longer display with coloring by first/middle/last.

Since the program update a few months ago, DVD Profiler maintains your local first/middle/last separation for credits in your local database, and will match automatically, ignoring a change to the parsing.

If a particular cast or crew member is not yet in your local DB, the profile's current parsing will be used, and you can then make changes as desired -  just make the change once locally and the program will keep it permanently, regardless of changes to the online.

Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Quoting Kulju:
Quote:
Even though the matching will be done automatically, can we see the differences between "accepted" online parsing and our local parsing on update profile preview window?

Yes.

Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Quoting hal9g:
Quote:
The way I understood it, if you have 'Cedric/the/Entertainer' and 'Cedric//the Entertainer' in your local database, and you download a new profile which has 'Cedric the Entertainer//', then the new profile will go into your local with 'Cedric the Entertainer//' and your local will now have all three variations.

It's then your choice whether you want to change the parsing locally.

Actually no, in this case it will pick one of the currents to match (the first in your listing).  You start with two variants and end with the same two variants.

3D in Title / Edition / Nowhere

Statement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Quoting Taro:
Quote:
OK, just to clarify what I meant and to be sure I understand you correctly, here are some examples:

Title: "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas"
Edition: leave empty
reason:  because 3D is part of the title

Title: "Transformers Dark of the Moon"
Edition: "Limited 3D Edition"
reason: explicit mention on the cover that it's a 3D edition

Title: "The Three Musketeers"
Edition: empty
reason: 3D isn't mentioned either in the title nor as an edition

Is that in line with the rules?

This is exactly in line with the rules, and how I would expect to see these entered.

In 3.8, the 3D indicator will be view-able from the mini-preview in the Add DVD window, and of course from the full preview.

Oh no.    I always try to get every quote and maybe sometimes I'm not the fastest, but I also could have missed a post, so I'm happy for every addition. (Better twice the same as missing an important post)

If the box set section in the rules does not contain an exception for a data element, standard rules apply.  So both dimension and color use standard rules for box sets.

What this means, based on the discussion in the thread is that 2D and color is supposed to exist on multi-film box sets

Shared letter/character in title

Quoting surfeur51:
Quote:
A new problem with a DVD title "as the cover". There is clearly only one S for Nun and Gun. Following rules, it is forbidden to add anything to what is on cover (remember "T4xi", and not "Taxi 4"), so we cannot enter the "real" title...

Statement:
Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
The S is shared between the words.  Neither "Nude nun with big guns", "Nude nuns with big gun", nor "Nude nuns with big guns" is exactly what's shown on the cover, although I would say that given no other information, each of these is as valid an interpretation as the others.

Since there's no way to enter a 'shared' letter into a text field, we must pick one of the three.  In this case, the spine, title screens, and credit block all agree - 'Nude Nuns with Big Guns'

In my opinion, the only usefull statements are those which were included in the following update of the rules. Statements of 2009/2012 that were never added to rules are just confusing for contributors.

I don't know why VirusPil has not been active in the forums.

I didn't realize that this thread has not updated - I used it many times.
