I'm auditing my release for this. The CoO has been entered as US (also against most if not all other versions) & I'm wondering if this is correct.

Following this thread, the CoO should be for the Production Company.

Looking at the opening credits they list the following for Production -

Halcyon Pictures - UK - Rebranded since the film.
Tartan Films - UK - Went into administration last year
Celluloid Dreams - France
X Filme Internationale - Germany
Lucky Red - Not 100% if it's the right one but if so, Italy.

Following that, for DVDP purposes, shouldn't it be UK or am I missing something?

UK sounds right to me.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

If all five companies listed were production companies, the field should be left blank. DVDP is unable to handle international co-productions.

Has that been backed up by Ken/Gerri? I only ask because I know of other films that have a CoO set but were produced by companies from more than one country.

No. And rightly so, IMHO, because it would result in quite a staggering number of empty CoO's - you wouldn't believe how many major Hollywood films have at least one foreign production company involved...

In the thread you linked to Gerri confirms that CoO is "where the production companies are based" (at the same time getting it wrong for LotR, because that was actually produced by a New Zealand company called WingNut). To me that implies that if they're scattered around multiple countries, you can't enter them. (To those that disagree: then please explain to me on what basis you would decide which country gets entered and which doesn't.)

Moreover, a long-standing feature request has been for DVDP to be able to handle multiple CoO's (not in the least from myself). Personally I would favour a checkbox implementation like the one we already have for subtitles, because that would avoid any debate over which country should come first.
If it were possible to properly handle multiple CoO's, there would be no need for a Feature Request.

Which is exactly why the feature requests on this issue were made. The single CoO field we have now makes the feature much less useful, because indeed many profiles SHOÜLD have an empty CoO field right now.

I fully agree that we should be able to enter multiple CoO.

I only disagree on the same basis that T!M does. Far too many films would be left empty at this time. As for which should be entered, I would probably do it on first listed. Either that or possibly if more came from one Country than others.

By the same token you could argue it should be the company that provided the largest number of crew or the company that provided the executive producer. And that's my point: it becomes totally arbitrary which decision grounds you would use. The result could well be endless ping-ponging.

I fully agree it is undesirable to have many blank CoO fields, but based on the status quo I don't see any other option. We REALLY need a programme change for this field to become useful.

Then until support is added for multiple CoO we really need an official statement saying how we should enter/not enter the data.

Just for your information: some time ago we had a discussion on this issue in the Contribution Rules committee. That discussion did not lead to an agreement.

I don't recall... have we ever heard from Invelos what the purpose of this field is?  I know we have received some direction on how to determine the correct value, but how is this data useful/helpful?

I'm not trying to start an argument, just curious about the value of this field.  From my perspective it doesn't seem important and I just want to know how Invelos or other users use it.

I guess under the current use of the field, it's useful to see how many films a certain country makes. Of course, it's also only partially useful when only one country can be entered.

That, and it also says something (sometimes a lot) about the composition of your own collection. E.g. I personally have a broad collection with at least 35 different CoO's in it, unlike some fellow users. To me it's a very useful statistic to see what share different CoO's have in my collection. (Of course, if you have a US-only collection, it won't be of much use to you...)
Sometimes I also use it to pick a movie to watch, using the Database Query plugin: e.g. if I feel like watching an oriental movie, it helps me narrowing down the choice.
In general, I would say its functionality might be compared to the Genre field.

We should not be leaving the field blank simply because there aren't enough of them.  We should enter the CoO based on the first production company listed...mainly because they are usually listed in order of importance...and move on.  I don't understand why it has to be any harder than that.
