I just bought the DVD "Kalifornia", UPC 027616921468, in Canada.  This UPC is already in the database for the same movie (Kalifornia) and same locality (Canada) and it has the same disc ID's (both sides) as my new DVD.  My DVD, however has a totally different cover than the one in the database.  Mine includes the notice "Package Design (c) 2006".  The movie in the database must be the exact same disc but repackaged with a new cover design but using the original UPC.  How to I enter my cover art without overwriting the original cover art?  I would have thought the UPC should have changed for new cover art but it didn't.

If your purchase is a re-release, you can't enter the cover art as the rules state to take the art from original release only.

You can however keep it locally....

Cover Images

Before submitting new scans of cover art, make sure your new covers are of significantly higher quality than the existing online images, and meet the following criteria:

    * The covers must match the profile exactly, including the UPC and locality.
    * Image size must be at least as large as the existing online covers. If you don't have a premium registration, you will be unable to verify this. Therefore, submit only images you have personally scanned at 100 DPI or higher.
    * If you scan images for your personal database at a quality that are higher than 100 DPI, you may still submit them. If accepted, they will automatically be downsized for inclusion in the main database.
    * Image quality must be at least on par with the existing online covers. Covers that are larger than existing images but are of inferior clarity will not be accepted.
    * Images must not contain extra watermarks, autographs, or site links.
    * Images must be of the front and back only. Do not include the spine in either the front or back image.
    * Make sure neither front nor back is of lesser quality than the existing scans.
    * If a DVD is packaged in a keep case, within a slipcase of some kind, scan the Cover Images from the outer slipcase. If, however, the Slipcase is reflective, and the inner cover art is identical, use the Keep Case art to scan, as it will give a better quality image.
    * If a title is re-released with the same UPC, but different cover images do not contribute the new images. This includes cases where a DVD was initially released in a slipcase, which was later removed. As explained in the introduction you may use your personal images in your local database, but they will not show online.
    * Do not contribute generic "Coming Soon" images. If the back image is not yet available (as in a pre-release), use the front images in both places.
    * HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs in either HD Slim or HD Keep Case type cases without slip covers should be scanned without the HD banner.

In short, you can't. As Berak noted you can maintain your image locally and i would say you should after all it is the one YOU own.

just clicked on the code ( 027616921468 ) and indeed the rear cover has half the over view in French.. therfore Canada Locality. USA locality is listed as seperate UPC, so IT Must be a rerelease.. has to be..

You scan your cover, edit the profile and replace the cover front and back. When finished go to the dvd profiler menu, select DVD, Select Lock, at the bottom you find covers, mark it. Go back to your profile. In the general info window you find at the bottom right the icon where a DVD is supported by a hand, right click on it, select never contribute, just in case the status has changed. Whenever contributing this profile, remenber to unmark contribute dvd cover. If you contributed by accident, cancel the process and restart contribution without the unmarked contribute dvd cover.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

I edited a profile for submission last week.  I updated my scans.  I reviewed the profile and was puzzled by the differences.  The existing was both pan & scan and widescreen with Spanish & French subtitles.  Mine was only widescreen and no French subtitles.

Only when i submitted did i realize the back covers were different and that since the original release the covers and disc (apparently used to be dual-sided) were completely different.

Same UPC.

BTW, Mardon as frustrating as I know it is to encounter this, it is not at all uncommon. Hollywood does this regularly.<sigh>

Hey Mardon,

I purchased the same dvd a couple of weeks ago (I much prefer the newer packaging!).

I just scanned in the new covers and added them to locally to my profiler. Make sure to lock the covers though so if you ever update your collection from the online database, the covers aren't reverted to the original red cover instead of the green one. (Not that all this hasn't been said, just wanted to let you know someone was in the same boat!  )
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

Be thankful the disc is widescreen. When most old 2 sided discs get replaced, it's the FS side that survives and makes it hard to hunt down the originals thanks to the UPC staying the same.
This literally turns ordering it online into gambling that you'll get the old one with WS. For this, Sony can burn in hell (they are the primary offenders)!
I've had to deal with this recently (The Deep, The Fan, & Sheena come to mind), thankfully used amazon sellers have been good about answering questions and not lying. Alomst any old Columbia/TriStar disc that hasn't been replaced by a new special edition, has been replaced with FS only. Be careful if ordering any of these, and go to amazon used or ebay to make sure you get the right disc. The only thing worse than a pan and scanned scope movie is knowing you should/could have the full widescreen version, except Sony f****d you.

I have been going through the same thing. I hate Sony for this. I have used this Home Theater Forum thread to help me identify some of these. There's an updated post towards the end of the thread too. I've also hunted down The Deep and The Fan as well as Picnic, Hush, Sweet & Lowdown just to name a few.

I wish that we could track alternate releases in DVD Profiler so that we would have a record here that these alternate video formats are out there. The cover art issue is growing, in my experience. I wish we could track those too.

Thanks for that link, nice to see a list compiled. Someday I'll get through the other 9 pages of it.
Also reminds me I got lucky a few weeks ago. Best Buy was having a sale on Sony discs, mostly the buthered new C/TS ones. I lucked out and found an old copy of Money Train with the WS side hidden at the back of the rack. I had been kicking myself for not grabbing that at Gamestop months before, figuring it would still be there like most other discs and I could find 2 otherrs for the buy 2 get 1 free sale that was running. Now Gamestop has buy 2 get 4 free, but the selection is next to nothing as they're weeding out dvds.

I think I read that the next version of profiler will have a spot for alternate/other images, like the re-issue covers and booklets. Sounds like tracking the changing covers is about to be easy, as they should be there when you add the title if someone did the scans already!

I had a similar lucky buy when I discovered the original WS/FS version of Peggy Sue Got Married at the back behind 3 of the newer FS-only copies.
