Just got my copy of this Norwegian movie (strange I had to buy it from Canada to get an anamorphic edition, and not here in Norway) Anyway, it's the Criterion Collection edition (037429138229) and on the first 35 minutes (Layer 1) there is DD 2.0. When the layer changes at chapter 9 suddenly it has DD Surround? How it's that possible. Is there anyone out there that has this release and can check it for me? If all copies are the same as mine, how should we contribute the audiotracks? DD 2.0 and DD Surround?

Although it would still be confusing why it might go from 2 channel to 3 channel...or 1 channels, which are all possible under DD2.0

Explained a bit strange here. The first 8 chapters (layer 1) is DD Stereo from chapeter 9 (layer 2) it changes to DD 2.0.  2 channels at first, then 3 channels. And yes, it's strange that it changes this way, first movie I have that changes like this. I hope that somebody can verify it for me, so I know that it's just not me with that kind of disc. Maybe it's one of a kind, so I can sell it for some $

I own the Criterion DVD as well, but can't really recall any strange audio issues. The back cover states the audio is "Surround", but that could possibly be incorrect. I can check my disc later tonight and see.

I don't think we would actually add an extra audio track for the 2nd layer of a disc however... especially when it's the same movie playing.

From my surroundreceiver. 2 channels at first, then 3 channels from the second layer It changes in the display where I see how many channels are active. I wrote to Criterion so I hope I get an answer from them soon.

That would be great.

True... Would be too weird.

If i were profiling it i'd see what the packaging says about the sound?  If it says it's either DD 2.0 or Surround i'd go with that.  If it didn't say i'd go with the most inclusive soundtrack detected.

It will be interesting to hear what Criterion says.

Well the surroundtrack (3 channels) occupies most of the movie, so it will stay as it is
I will post what Criterion say when/if I get an answer from them.

Okay, I just checked my Insomnia disc and I can confirm what bentyman has described.

I opened the VOB files in PowerDVD, and the section of the film on the 1st layer of the disc reads as this:

Quote:

Audio Attributes:
Audio Coding mode: Dolby Digital
Sampling Rate: 48kHz
Audio application mode: Not Specified
Number of Audio channels: 2.0
Bitrate: 192 Kbps
Number of Audio streams: 1

The section of the film on the 2nd layer of the disc reads as this:

Quote:

Audio Attributes:
Audio Coding mode: Dolby Digital
Sampling Rate: 48kHz
Audio application mode: Surround
Number of Audio channels: 2.0
Bitrate: 192 Kbps
Number of Audio streams: 1

So as you can see, the 1st layer is certainly not flagged for "Surround" (or at least not specified as such) but the 2nd layer is clearly flagged as "Surround". Very strange.

Sounds like they might have just applied the flag incorrectly; the soundtrack itself is probably the same it's just setting the bit for the remaining chapters... err, assuming that's possible!

Very curious what Criterion says about this.

Probably: "This was an early disc of ours" (it's just passed nine years).

Or; "Blame Canada."

Regardless, this film is tons better than the remake I'm sure Nolan wants off his filmography badly if The Dark Knight is as good as I hear...

Finally an update for this issue. Here's the answer I got from Criterion:

"Thanks for your patience! Your email hasn't been forgotten, but it's taking some time to sit down with someone to check this out. I'll be in touch as soon as I have any information or an answer, and meanwhile please feel free to write in again if you have any other questions."

I will post here whenI get a final answer from them
