Using 'credited as' for people with two initials...is it needed?

IMO, there's no difference between J.K. and J. K., and both variants should be parsed J. / K. The punctuation mark means that they are two separate names. It's a different situation with JK vs. J K - IMO these are two "different" credits and should be parsed JK /  and J / K  , respectively, since there is no punctuation mark.

I agree too. Now if this would be added to the rules, as the standard for these instances, I could get rid of these crazy J. J. Doe [J.J. Doe] entries.

You guys don't honestly expect anything like common sense to creep into Profiler, do you?

Behemot has the right idea, though.

This is all very similar to the whole debate on entering suffixes. If you feel the difference between J.K. Simmons and J. K. Simmons is a "typographic choice on the part of the credits creators" (dixit northbloke), then I'd say that the difference between Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Downey, Jr. is such a "typographic choice", too. For both issues I feel Invelos should simply set a standard - I have pleaded for this many, many times before. IMHO, that's the only way to end it, and probably also the only way to clean up all those pointless double entries for the same people.

Couldn't agree more. Set a standard, never mind which. And no reason to use credited as for these "distinctions". If John Doe Jr and John Doe, Jr. would indeed be different people, we surely wouldn't rely on the comma to distinguish. We have BY for that, for better or worse.

I agree, too.  While it isn't a good idea to assume that John Doe is the same person as John Doe, Jr., there is little risk in assuming that John Doe Jr. and John Doe, Jr. are the same person.  Or that J.K. Simmons is the same person as J. K. Simmons.

Standardization isn't necessarily a bad thing -- especially in this area.

Of course all this has been said before... and most of us agree... it is even been talked about in the rules committee forum... but we are still waiting on word from Ken that we can actually do it.

Maybe the next time he updates the rules it will be in there.

As Pete said, we can't do anything about the 'Jr' situation but we can do something about the double initials.  I will be checking my profiles and making changes.

What exactly are saying should be done about double initials?

Update existing instances of doubles: J.K.// to J./K./

Vote against current and future changes to use Credit As to eliminate the space between initials with periods?

I'm all for what Behemot described but am unclear what actions you thought appropriate?

Thanks.

Yes, this is what I believe we should be doing...it is what I am going to be doing.

I will not be voting 'no' to contributions that use the 'credited as' feature because, technically, they are not wrong.  I will, probably, make a note of the profile and submit a change afterwards.

I've got my stuff locally parsed as first initial/middle initial/last.  Since my local has a mountain of cross linking and credited as stuff, I end up having to manually put in cast/crew changes that people submit anyway.  When I come across these double initials entries that people submit, I just ignore them locally.  If I were to blindly suck in the stuff that's submitted, I've have bigger problems than a double initial space.
