My position on names comes from not being an American, but from a person who is internationally familiar with many of the world's naming conventions, as well as American, and a recognition that the only real answer is person him/herself, there is no LAW about names, there is not even a real convention per se. Every person's name is deeply personal, and they handle it in whatever manner they choose to handle it for whatever reasons they have.

You say that like it is some kind of global truth. Maybe that is the case in the US. However, there are laws about names in some countries. You can not take whatever name you like, names must follow the rules of the language, the law might even tell how spouses can combine their last names after marriage, woman can not have male first name and vice versa, how many first (given) names a person can have, etc.

Wow, Jykke I have NEVER run into that internationally. I'll tell you what, my friend, if that is true those are places I don't ever want to even visit, let alone live in.    Makes me think of an old Johnny Cash song.

Sorry to hear that Enry, I hope you reconsider. I'd also recommend the Block system if you're having issues with a particular user.

I agree with North.  That is why the system was invented.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Right now many can't even place a straight von in the right field, how you expect them to even look at such a list?

I'll take ONE name field now, thankyou!

You have to be careful with Van, too.  One of my favorite authors is Eric Van Lustbader.  Van is his middle name as his surname is Lustbader.  According to the website EricVanLustbader.com, "he dropped his middle name, Van for several years due to a confusion about his last name."  I learned this after having a hard time finding his books in my local library because the librarian was filing them under "V."

I think the blocking system is not a solution in this case. It can't be an excuse for allowing abuses anyway.
You can ignore/block someone if you want to, but any user has the right not to be harassed, as the forum rules say. The rep system was a good idea at first, for a while we had some peace, but the deterring effect has vanished away almost completely now.
My policy is to almost never reply to slandering and diminishing posts because I don't like flames, but I don't enjoy being attacked either. Others left this forum for the same reason. Blocking is not an option with an experienced hyperactive user who posts in every thread and mixes irrelevant and insulting statements with other more relevant / influential sentences.
Maybe I will still use the other Invelos forums, like technical or general discussions, but what's the point of posting here where one post out of three or four is from Mr. I-know-it-all? It's no fun anymore.

Ta ta for now!

Enry I want to be sure I understand you correctly. It is perfectly acceptable to make demeaning and attacking comments about another user, but it is NOT Ok for the other user to respond....do I have that correct? And because a user will stand up to you and not accept your demeaning remarks then you will leave...I never said I wanted to leave, what I do want you to do is, and I say this with all due respect to you, I can only judge what I see, it appears to me that your primary objective since the day you joined was to niggle, twist, misinterpret and try to spin the rules to your purpose. Why I do not know, I know that I don't appreciate it.

I've reread this posting again. I did not realy see any attacks in this one? Or did you start one with this:

I think Enry's talking about the "is there nothing you won't attack." comment on page 1, despite the fact all he did was post a big list of name articles.

When you come with a posting like this, ain't that an attack on the current rules? Nothing to be offended by, I would think.

I don't understand how you can see Enry's post as an attack on the rules. He says himself it's simply an expanded list as an aid for contributors as there's not the room to list them all in the rules.

It's like saying Dan's post of case type images is an attack of the rules.

I would disagree with you there, north, since Dan was instrumental in the design of them, he in fact collaborated with both myself and Jesse on the Case Types. Yes, I viewed Enry's list as yet another attack on the Rules, and yet another one centered around culture.

I'm Dutch speaking and it is only half clear to me what EnryWiki wants here? and for attack i don't know how strong this is: attack [the ~]
run [the ~]
assault [the ~]
rush [the ~]
raid [the ~]
storming [the ~]
scaling [the ~]

spur of the moment [the ~]
caprice [the ~]
whim [the ~]
burst [the ~]
I would rather go with the last 4. (like in the Commons where politicians have heated discusions)

I'm guessing here you're asking how strong a word "attack" is? In english, it's a very strong word, usually used to describe a violent assault with the intention of doing harm. eg. "The army attacked the citadel", "the two wild dogs attacked each other".
It's usually used to desribe any vindictive action intended to cause damage. That's why I don't see it as appropriate to describe Enry's initial post that way.
