A new user has just contributed a US profile for The Devil Wears Prada with the following contribution note

Quoting:
Quote:
Added main cast from IMDb

That makes me wonder if the Contribution Rules are visible enough. Maybe an explicit link like this would help... I used Paint Shop Pro

Well, I think your proposal wouldn't prevent those contributors from this, because they are obviously not interested in the rules anyway. Those can only learn by pain and many no-votes

Maybe a hint and a link to the rules when uploading a contribution could help?!

I'd really like to say you're right, but the rules are available from program level too. If I was a newbie (and it's not that long ago that I was, for some I probably still am), I'd check there first.

So Thorsten is right.
What scares me more is that quite often contributions like the one mentionend above get som "Yes"-votes too.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I assume some pathological yes-voters are afraid or even not able to type the mandatory no-vote-reason into the box

Not sure how much it would help, but a more visible link to the rules sure wouldn't hurt any.

I was thinking about this the other day, What about if the first time you contribute, it first brings you to the rules. Or maybe to contribute you have to (first time only) check a box that says I have read the contribution rules and agree to contribute according to them. Something like a EULA.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of these first time contributors with IMDB cast lists aren't even aware of the rules..

It is probably a do-able feature (and forgive me if it's been discusses before) but what if there were kind of "built-it" security features for people with few (insert random number here) contributions.

Check boxes like when you install software that will not let you get to the contribution page (or after will not let you submit) until you've checked all of the appropriate boxes. (these listed below are just examples)

1. Y  N  My cover scans have no watermarks on them and match the UPC and locality of my submission.
2. Y  N  I took my cast and crew information from the DVD credits and did NOT paste them from IMDb.
3. Y  N  I have fully documented my changes and given proper sources for said changes.
4. Y  N  <<Insert your own here>>

As memory serves, there used to me a similar type of feature back in the old Invocative days.  Whatever happened to it??

BTW, I totally agree with enrywiki that the contribution rules should have a permalink at the top of every page.

If you are making your first few contributions, finding the link to the rules is not as obvious as it will become... And beyond that, if you are debating rules and interpretations in the Contribution forum, having a direct link there (without having to go to the Database) could be helpful as well.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Agree! Check boxes would help too,
But I would rephrase a little bit:
1. Y  N  I understand the source for Cast & Crew information I am going to submit is film credits from the DVD itself.
2. Y  N  I did not take Cast & Crew information from a third party database.
3. Y  N  I understand that IMDb is a third party database, not a DVD.
4. Y  N  I am not crossing fingers while I answer!
5. Y  N  I swear!
6  Y  N  Srsly! No kidding!

?

We have problems accepting data contributions from politicians?

But we allow them to govern us?

It's been a few years, but wasn't there  an ON line test for you to enroll in for the 'right' to be able to vote?  This 'test or quiz had a series of questions of do and dont's  .
If this New comer had just completed this test,, wouldn't he remember that we don't allow IMDB credit at all??

You always have to remember that other than coming to the site to download the program.  You never have to come back except if you make contributions or decide to vote on them.  You can in theory never notice that there are rules.  From what i have seen, a lot of newer user first posts in the forums are trying to understand why a contribution was rejected.

I think the contribution rules need to be integrated into the program better. Maybe just a little box internal to the  program pops up when you go contribute that say "I have read and understand the contribution rules" with yes or no and a like to the rules.  Then have the program take you to the site to enter your notes.

Exactly. This is what I remember too. On your first contribution you'd be taken to the rules and then have to take this test before the contribution would be accepted.

Is this no longer the case?
