| Posted: | | | | OK we need some uniformity on where you can get the edition from i received no votes when i removed a edition because it was not on the front cover the no voters said that the edition can come from anywhere not just the cover i have now made a contribution adding an edition which i got from a booklet that was with the DVD and have received a no vote saying that it must come from the cover, So what is it must the edition come from the front cover only like the title or can it come from anywhere on the DVD. This is what the rules say Quote: Edition The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition). It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title. |

| Posted: | | | | Well, if I were parsing the rules, I'd say the section about taking from the DVD box would exclude any use of the booklet. It's pretty weak, I know. Personally, I'm not a big fan of some of these edition entries that I've seen pop up, but what can you do? |

| Posted: | | | | Difficult Nick , as the rules do not appear to specify what 'standard' is when it quotes - 'If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box'. My assumption (dangerous I know) has been that 'standard' meant it was one of the built-in selections in the drop down choice, and therefore I have only ever taken data from the case (box), normally, but not exclusively, on the front cover. Whether thats 100% right or wrong, I do not know, but it's how I've understood it. | | | |

Not just the cover, the rules say "from the DVD box", which would include the cover, spine, and back. And I believe that covers both Standard and non-Standard editions. For instance, if there's absolutely nothing on the front but the title, but in the Overview on the back cover is says something like "This Collector's Edition has been in the making... blah blah" then I think it would be appropriate to use Collector's Edition in the field. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

| Posted: | | | | I think one of the most ignored phrases in the rules is this one: Quote: ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title It's on my list right after: Quote: Make sure your contributions add significant value to the database What I'm saying is that you don't have to contribute everything you see... | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

Skip I agree it is silly, but I can't agree that it is wrong. The rules say to take it from the "DVD Box". That, at least to me, means anywhere on the box. I don't like it, and often remove them from my local, but that is what the rules say. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There seems to be an agreement between german contributors to insert the Dist Trait "Verleihversion" for rental versions. I have no clue when they agreed to this. I don't even know who "they" are or where/when exactly this agreement was constituted. Since it was meant as an initial contribution and another initial contribution had taken place a few hours earlier, I withdrew and let it be. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Skip Well, there's also the "ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title" part of the rules. I didn't explicitly say it in my example because it's spelled out so clearly in the rules. My example would only come into play if there was also another version of the DVD with a different UPC. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

I think the Rule should be changed to only allow editions to come from the front cover. I don't think I would agree with that change. Whilst I agree that the edition field is over-used, there have been valid editions taken from places other than the front cover. | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

The only way to stop people from putting anything one might find anywhere on the cover, is to restrict it to the front cover. Would it mean a couple might get dropped? Probably so. They could always be added locally. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |
