| | Posted: | | | | When I double dip I usually bring the old DVD to work to see if I can give it to any of my coworkers rather that going thru the hazzle of trying to sell it. So today I brought my old copy of The Guns of Navarone to work. The following conversation ensued between me and one of my colleagues (in his mid thirties): - Do you want my old copy of Guns of Navarone?- I don't know. Is it any good? - You haven't seen Guns of Navarone???- No [takes the DVD and reads the back cover]. It's from 1961! - Yes. So?- They didn't have any cool special effects back then! - Uh... what do you mean?- No computer graphics. - No, but it's still a really good film.- Nope. I don't like old movies that don't have cool special effects. - You're kidding, right?- No. Have you seen The Dirty Dozen? - Sure. Not one of my favorites, but it's a good movie.- I almost fell asleep while trying to watch it. - Have you seen Where Eagles Dare?- Yeah. Boring! At this point I just shake my head and leave. I put the DVD in a bookshelf where I usually leave stuff that I have replaced with better versions (usually VHS for DVD), hoping that there is someone at work who has better taste than my colleague.  | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

| | Posted: | | | | Y'know, I've run into this as well and I usually tell the person that, back then, that was the "cool special effect." Dropping a train off a trestle bridge wasn't just just done, it took planning and thought. Harryhausen's effects were spectacular (still are, IMHO). Heck, squibs were a pretty inovative effect and if not done properly could really hurt the wearer.
Sure, there are some older films I don't particularly like but they usually belong to genres that I'm not interested in. But I still appreciate them for what they are.

| | Posted: | | | | I don't like those computer generated effets. When Gladiator came out a few years ago everybody went crazy about the view of the stadium and all. Some actually got angry at me when I said I was not impressed, they couldn't see why.
I tell them "It's because when I look at computer generated images I see computer generated images, it's not real and you can see that it's not real, you can actually see that it's been computer generated, the textures and the shadows show it", they still don't understand. You should have seen some faces when I said if they ever re-made Ben-Hur today I would probably hate it, the 1959 (or is it 56 ?) version looks real. Why ? Because it is. There's thousands of real people in a real stadium. There's real horses, pulling real chariots controled by real people. Now that's impressive. Gollum was fabulous - he seemed real to me. Anyone who eliminates a movie based on the year it was produced is narrow minded, short sighted, and unworthy of any of your collection. |
