I was looking around for some lesser-known good horror flicks and I stumbled upon a film called Men Behind the Sun.  In spite of reviews of the film (online and in DVDP) I have no idea whether the film is of any value at all or if it is simply an excuse to show the atrocities of Unit 731 in an ultra-gratuitous manner.

Just wondering what you guys (and girls... maybe) think.  As much as I love horror movies, I can't stand things like Faces of Death or crap like that.

EDIT:  Fixed some typos that made my post sound like gibberish.  I guess that's what happens when you're really tired.

Havn't seen them, but I have heard there is some extreme torture & violence. The 1st of the 4 movies supposedly uses a real corpse in a torture scene... Parts 1 & 4 are supposed to be the best of the 4 movies while 2 & 3 are stinkers because they reuse a whole lot of footage.

Even without having seen it I know it's on alot of peoples most disgusting movie lists with other films like the Guinea Pigs, Nekromantik, Cannibal Holocaust, Mountain/Slave of the Cannibal God, Cannibal, & Evil Dead Trap.

I'm guessing if you don't like Faces of Death, then stay away from Men Behind the Sun (I've only seen part 1). Although I personally believe it wasn't just an excuse to show ultra-gratuitous violence, in certainly has that, and a lot of it is very uncomfortable to watch. There is also some real animal violence (a cat is thrown into a room of starving rats) and I believe the use of real corpses is actually true, both in the vivisection scene, and as background bodies scattered around.
It is a very good film, I think highly of it (despite the totally gratuitous animal violence). It certainly reminds you that there is still a lot of resentment, even hatred in China about their treatment by the Japanese, and it certainly ranks up there with the Guinea Pigs and Nekromantik.

Here's an interview with the director, who clearly has a chip on his shoulder, but does consider these films as having a value...

"When I was there in Tokyo, they said to me that I had to leave Japan immediately or I would be shot! After that, I stayed with friends. I screened Men Behind the Sun for students in the Tokyo university. All the students at the cinema understood what they were about to see. When the film had finished, certain students cried, but most were completely shocked and sat there in silence."
