I realize people need to make money and a good product requires good people to maintain it but this complete change from a free version (2.4) to a Crippled Version (3.0) is disappointing.

The free versions are the same locally, the current free version has: "Unlimited collection size, no ads, no time limits, no nag screens".

But it does disable some features when the collection size goes over 50.

Yes, but those are mostly online features that you lose.

You may want to take a look at the registration info page.

http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/Registration.aspx

The only two online features you lose are the ability to upload your collection (although the original poster has over 250 in his online collection) and the ability to download reports, according to that list.

Came across this site by accident when I could not update my Version 2.4 nor get access to My Profiler. After digging into the site I am extremely dissapointed by the direction that DVD Profiler is headed.

I have used DVD Profiler for a few years and it is the best program out there for documenting your DVD collection. but this new direction where you must pay to make the program work, completely sucks. What happened to the two versions, a free version and another with all the 'Bells and whistles'? I realize people need to make money and a good product requires good people to maintain it but this complete change from a free version (2.4) to a Crippled Version (3.0) is disappointing.

Now I would consider buying a registration key but I have been burned on several occasions when I purchased a "lifetime" registration only to either have the program discontinued or change to a charge per version upgrade. With this current change discontinuing the Free version, their is no guarantee that invelos will honour lifetime registrations. Maybe in six months they will decide they are not getting enough money and make people pay for every upgrade.

Just Another Money Grab.
Very Dissappointed.

Talk about a cheap guy  , 30$ isn't the end of the world. Just continue to use your 2.4 free version, but I suppose that you have never entered a profile by yourself (not contribute, since you can't but make your own on your PC). I've paid for 3.x version if Ken decide that I have to paid again for the 4.x version no problem, he have to live like everyone else.

Finally a topic where everyone will agree

And just to add my comment; if Ken gives free upgrades to people when starting a new company and also kept free support after the one off payment for the whole time IVS were running DVD Profiler he certainly doesn;t sound like someone who'd suddenly switch to demanding additional payments after 6 months unless it was for some major additional functionality (as an option) or he had no choice except letting the program die.

IMO Corrupt, you obviously just want something for nothing (which you've been getting all these years) and never had any intention of supporting the product you use, which now pays the creator 100% of the money he and his family has to live on... and for the price of a DVD of which you obviously have plenty that's pretty pathetic.

Just for a change: let's compile 40 odd pages of complete agreement, now shall we?

We all know we can do the opposite, how about this for a challenge....

The troll remains to have only one post. If he/she came back to view the handiwork the first post wrought, the poster hasn't bothered to place another opinion anywhere on this forum.

Which means either the poster really doesn't care much or is afraid to continue to defend the position taken. Why bother with 40 pages of us all saying the program is worth $30 even if it never gets an upgrade, ever. (Even though we know there already has been one upgrade since 3.0 was first released just more than two months ago.)
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I think it was actually Ken testing our loyalty.
Now he is going to use these messages as testimonies for the product superiority.

Cliff,

I don't know which version you are running, but I am running 3.0.3 beta. There have been two updated releases (3.0.1 and 3.0.2) and currently 3.0.3 is in beta.

Also Invelos has released a new plugin for posting DVDs for sale. Two other plugins are not yet on this site but can be installed from the web.

So all in all I would say it is even more alive than you did!

This is the best program to organise my DVD collection. $30 is cheap. I would have gladly paid the double. And if Ken decides to make us pay for a major upgrade, I will gladly pay him.

If you're just talking about "online" features, that may be right.  But I had to rebuild my work laptop while the site was down and I can tell you that once you pass that 50 disc limit, the local very is extremely crippled.  I couldn't even re-open my layout I had designed.  So in that respect I can understand the complaints.  The prgram is awful on the free version over 50 discs.  Fortunately I was able to grab my key from my install on my home machine.

With that said, I can't support the complainers.  Free lifetime upgrades are for paying members.  They still have their free version of 2.4.  The fact that it no longer works 100% is just too bad.  They never had a guarentee that it would work for free for life, nor was their any implication that they could upgrade to the new free version for life and retain the same features.  Lifetime upgrades only apply to paying members.

A 250 disc collection at a bargain rate of ever $5 per disc (which would be some amazing bargain shopping!) is still $1250.  I have no sympathy for those who won't cough up $30.  If you like the program, pay the money.  If you don't, there are a lot of free options.  Two of the more popular options are DVDSpot.com and DVDAficionado.com.  Go there and use them.
