I paid for the registration with 2.4 and I cannot upgrade bc I don't have XP. So any and all contributions for 2.4 will cease to exist correct?

I am glad so many are happy with the 3.0, but what about those that cannot upgrade in the near future?

Doesn't seem right...

Ken has not indicated closure of IVS 2.4 anytime I soon. I suspect he will maintain both Db's temporarily.

Sounds to me like it is time for you to come out of the cave and upgrade your system. Nothing lasts forever, Microsoft probably is no longer supporting your OS either. So, Microsoft screwed you? I don't think so, I think you are trying to hard to pinch pennies and hold onto antiquated technology.

Most people that still use Win98 is because they have some software running on it that was not upgraded since. Some old accounting or sales software usually, where they have/use for important business information.

However, the fact that that particular developer left them "out dry" and didn't make any upgrade for their products is a flaw of that particular developer, and not of the ones that kept supporting and developing theirs.

You'll notice that the vast majority of mass-market products don't support their Win9x versions anymore for quite some time. Even Microsoft closed up shop on Win9x support already. With DVDProfiler, like with any other product, it'd be a simple matter of time until the legacy OS support was discontinued (I'm saying all this but I don't even know if there is any way of running DVDPro 3 in w98).

Fact is Scottie, it's harder and harder to find any products that keep win98 support. If you are "inprisioned" to w98 by some old, non-upgradeable software, I think you should start to think on replacing it because it's keeping you in the past and making your life (computer speaking) more and more difficult. I also replaced my old accounting software much against my will at the time, but it's one of the best decisions I made as now I keep getting upgrades and new functionalities from the new one.

Come on, I've been thru 3 OSs already since 98

I don't understand the negative attitude.  People with 2.4 might be screwed, but I don't see any reason to automatically jump to that conclusion.  It's also possible that Ken might tweak 2.4/2.5 to work with the new database.  Only Ken knows at this point.

I hope I haven't passed a negative attitude. I went on to a more general analysis of the situation, as this is the reality (older OS's start having little compatible -recent- software).
You'll notice I even said I don't know if 3.0 runs in w98.
I'm not bashing his request in any way. I just took the chance to give a broader advice that would ease up his use of software in general.

Cheers,

Neither am I, but I am having some fun with it, admittedly at the user's expense. I could always send him some flint and steel.

They should look at Virtual Center or VMware Workstation, that way they can run older apps that won't run on XP or Vista.

Funny you should mention that.  I was thinking the same thing yesterday.

Ken would need to re-write the "download profiles" routine for 2.4/2.5 so that it could download the correct fields from the 3.0 main database and ignore the fields that 2.4/2.5 doesn't need.

He could do the same for uploading from 2.4/2.5 to the 3.0 main database, but he'd have to be careful about letting 2.4/2.5 users update to the 3.0 database to make sure that they did not delete fileds that aren't in 2.4/2.5.

It would be a business decision on his part as to whether he wanted to expend his time working on a dying version or concentrate on enhancing 3.0.

I know what I'd do, strictly from a businees perspective!

Scottie raised the issue before the haitus, if I remember he also had quite low spec hardware, which was one reason he hadn't upgraded to XP.

It doesn't. If I try to install all I see is an Error-Message:

Windows 9x an NT are not supported."

I was referring to scottiew.  It seems he's assuming the worst and getting all worked up over it.  The fact is we don't know enough yet to know if those fears are justified yet or not.

I can understand the reluctance to change OS; my primary MIDI sequencer worked great on Win 98, but doesn't work on XP (specifically, whenever I try to save anything, it CTDs), so I've had to keep an ancient laptop running 98 so I can do the musical work I need to---I've tried a bunch of XP sequencers but none of them have anywhere near the functionality of the W98 one.    Everything is aimed at mp3 creation or printed scores rather than MIDI.

You might want to setup your computer to dual boot (as long as Win98 drivers are available for the newer computer). Bootit NG works well for stuff like that http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html
