I admit the concept of child profiles eluded me after I first starting using V.3.  After I figured it out I was very excited to be able to break up some of my movie box sets into individual listings for my collection.  Some of the discs I put into my computer instantly assigned themselves to the parent collection....awesome!

But of course some of my discs have up to five movies on a one-sided disc.  And in other collections I have four movies on a two-sided disc.  Well, that can't be too difficult, only one profile per disc, right?  I only assume that as DVD Profiler 3 defines a disc as either one or two-sided.

Well, the rules say:
Quote:
The term "Box Set" is used to define any release that includes more than one film. The main examples are:

    * Sets where each film is packaged individually, and held together in a package of some kind.
    * Sets where each film is on a separate disc, but not individually packaged. This includes gatefold Digipaks and 2-Disc sets in normal DVD cases.
    * Sets containing 2 films, one on each side of Dual-Sided DVD.

Create individual profiles for each movie in these Box Sets. Use individual UPCs if they are available or use Disc ID (read on a DVD-ROM) if not. Create each of these individual profiles in line with the standard Contribution Rules...

I see the rules don't deal with the concept of more than one movie on one side of a disc.

But it does create the loophole for two-sided disc = two child profiles ~ Sets containing 2 films, one on each side of Dual-Sided DVD.  Create individual profiles for each movie in these Box Sets.

So now I have a member insisting to me that his two-sided, four movie DVD = FOUR Child Profiles.  Technically, I don't even see how this would be feasible in DVD Profiler 3 unless its going to download 2 child profiles for one side of a submitted disc.  BUT, according to the rules as currently written, I can understand his interpretation.

I figured this had to have been discussed already, but I couldn't find it.  Please refer me to the link if its out there.

I'd appreciate some advice or direction so that I may submit and vote correctly on the database.

There is no way at this time to contribute a 4 movie on 2 discs as a boxset with 4 child profiles (1 for each movie)... it is impossible at this time... as you can't use the same disc id for 2 different movies. I personally haven't made any of my movie sets like this into boxsets at all yet.

As for should they be broken up in the database at all yet... I don't know... I guess you could technically do a profile per side being a profile for 2 movies each... but it is not covered in the rules yet... they only deal with 1 movie per disc and 2 movies per disc IF they are 1 movie per side... So the way I read the rules they shouldn't be submitted as boxsets at all yet.

You can profile them as if they were TV episodes using the dividers in the cast & crew areas.  Not ideal, not perfect, but at least it gets them into the database.  At some point, we will get functionality to properly profile each movie, and these can be revisited then.

Pete:

The Rules require updating, these can now be addressed through dividers at least for Cast and Crew, we still  have no way to isolate them for Audio and video purposes...but half a loaf is better than no loaf.

I agree Skip... just something we need to remember to clarify in the rules when we get to that point.

You can also use the Disc ID for the first movie on each side and create manual profiles for the remianing movies on each side and add all of them to the boxset.

Obviously the Manual profiles can not be contributed

So by that system, if the "only the first movie" profiles were accepted into the database, then every user who downloaded that profile would (a) be required to create those manuals for the additional movies if they wanted a complete list of their collection and (b) the additional titles would be forever missing on their online list.

You really couldn't contribute that method online.

Use the dividers to split the movies on each disc ID, if you want to contribute to the online DB.

I am not proposing this for the on-line database.  I'm just saying you could do this locally.

However, they could just add the info about the second (third, fourth) movie to the profile for the first movie locally.

With the new backup capability to backup selected profiles, it would be easy for the community to share these manual profiles.

In fact we might want to start a sticky thread where people could list the manual profiles that they have availabel to share.
