Birth Name: Jada Koren Pinkett
Credited as Jada Pinkett

Name after marrying Will Smith: Jada Pinkett Smith
Credited as Jada Pinkett Smith

So how should the name be parsed?
Did her maiden name become her middle name or does she now have a double barrelled last name?

Double-barrelled. No particular justification, it's just her last name, whether hyphenated or not.

How do people feel about using this method for agreeing on name parsing, birth year and common names?

Simply have a poll for 2/3 days and then add the result to a pinned "Actor Names" thread.

From what I've read, Ken is keen for the community, ie us, to sort out these things ourselves. This seems to be the easiest and fairest way to do it.

It's an interesting way to sort things out, but really it's not the sort of thing that's up for debate. Either it's a surname or it's a middle name, it's not a question of choice.
In this case, because she kept her maiden name, her surname is now Pinkett Smith, she doesn't gain a middle name just because she got married.

She followed normal American conventions for changing one's name upon marriage, by replacing her birth middle name with her birth last name and adopting her husband's last name as hers.

It is no more a compound name than the moon is made of green cheese.

That may be convention for you but almost every woman I know who has retained their maiden name and taken their husband's name as well use it as a double-barrelled last name.

In fact, I can't think of a single one that considers their maiden name to now be their middle name.  And yes some of them are non-hyphenated.

She dropped her middle name of Koren, replacing it with Pinkett, then added Smith because that is her husband's last name.  Jada/Pinkett/Smith    It's traditional to do it that way in the US, and is a mark of respect for her husband by adopting his last name.

So what?  That is a relatively recent convention.  It wasn't done that way as a rule when I was a kid in the 50's, or in my parents youth during the Depression, or in my grandparents youth during the Roaring 20's.  98% of the wedding announcements in our local paper follow that same convention.  It is extremely unusual for a woman to adopt a hyphenated/compound last name unless it for business reasons, and even then most just retain their maiden name for that purpose.

I agree with Rifter on this issue. My wives replaced their middle name with their last name. They took my last name as their last (married twice and that's it).  Also, our/my friends did the same.

There is a 3rd compromise option:

Use Common Name "Jada//Pinkett" and use the As credited field for "Jada Pinkett Smith"

I'm inclined to think that it should be Jada//Pinkett Smith because she was only credited before as Jada Pinkett and didn't use her middle name then so why would she use her middle name now.

Where is your data backing up this claim? I don't see any.

As I've stated before, on this forum and at IVS, of the many women I know personally who have done what Jada has, they STILL have a middle name. No matter what you say.

Heck, my MOM uses her maiden name before her married name, and SHE didn't "give up" her middle name. And SHE was married over 50 years ago.

Whewreas you don't have any hard data to back up your claim.  Again.

My mother and 4 sister would heartily disagree with you John. They did not loose their middle names when they got married. Also, none of them opted for a double barrel last name either, but that is probably because they were married before the feminist movement.

The common way they would be shown in an obituary for instance would be First/Middle/ (Maiden) Last.

The best way is Jada//Pinkett and then use 'as credited' in cases were she uses her married name.

Then ALL of her movies will show up under one name as the new versions are set to do.

This is far out. If we allow information on a persons private life to affect the way we parse their names, we will allow for all kinds of discussions about people who know about actors marrying, remarrying etc. And for lesser known persons ind the DB, this data is scarce or not available. This is not wikipedia trying to sort out the actors' backgrounds etc - the only purpose is to see who's credited in what movies. This only causes confusion! A name in between two other names is a middle name!

I agree completely. Some convention about swapping middle names that even those it is apparently effects can't agree on is completely useless to us.

As for the common name solution of using Jada Pinkett, I don't think any common name can be agreed for the main database until we have an agreed method to do so, which we still lack. I would be surprised if  that method ended up giving Jade Pinkett as she has been credited significantly more often as Jada Pinkett Smith.

She has also had one Jada Pinkett-Smith incidently!
