That's always been my understanding, Donnie. I don't think DVDShrink supports BD, but with DVDShrink it usuaklly indicated that Stereo was RARE almost to the extreme, most alleged DD Stereo tracks came back being reported as 3-channel, instead of 2, which was induicative of a Surroudnd Flag, this was backed up by my Pioneer Receiver.<shrugs>

Well, if that is the case I was right all the time with trying to change all Stereo tracks to surround.

Ah, well, I kept it local for now and contijued contributing withiout the Stereo-Surround changes.

But always nice to see that in the end those people that attacked me seemed to be plain wrong.

The surround data is there no matter how it's compressed. I'm trying to determine about the flag.

Thx Ace,

for also supporting what I was trying to do.
But I am over it now, as long as KEN will officially state that plain stereo is not existing, I will leave to change all that audio to others that are willing to fight this fight.

But its nice to have another professional statement that def tells us the SURROUND DATA is always there.

I would like to see the face of especially one person now. The first person I have ever blocked on a forum

Owyeah,
Surround ftw

Keeping in mind commentaries and such aren't necessarily based on a surround down-mix, though. 5.1 has been the norm for about 20 years. Does anyone know if most movies even have a surround downmix made these days?

Even on PCM tracks, I doubt that.

Dude,  you have a skewed view of the world. Asking for documentation is not an attack. You were the one attacking others as a response to a very reasonable request.

This is exactly the issue that Donnie here refuses to acknowledge.

The case for The Wall claims it Has PCM surround. I can check flags when I get home. PCM would have been how Dolby surround was delivered to theaters with digital sound, though I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean there are any flags to support this.

Even with commentaries DVDShrink used to report 3-channel.<shrugs> In my evperience with both my receiver and DVDShrink, genuine 2-channel stereo is a very rare animal indeed. The one lone exception to this appears to be Television shows from the early 80's up to the point they went to DD 5.1 for broadcast...mid 90s maybe.

Rare or not, I require the contributor to actually check and document the data before submitting a change, especially one that disagrees with what is printed on the case. You know what happens when we assume.

If some people take this personally I cannot be held responsible. And I fully expect my own contributions to be held to the same level of scrutiny. it is only reasonable.

This is about the exact thing I said when all this started, it is nice to know, that I knew much more about this than the persons who seemed to have not much knowledge and just voted NO without even trying to understand what I was saying without even trying to check if I was right.

case closed for me, let's move on...

cheers

The issue was that you were not providing specific documentation for the title being changed, but rather only offering a blanket statement about what is the norm in 'Modern Cinema'. Then of course your subsequent behaviour did you no favours.

The difference between you and Skip is that he WILL and has done the work to verify any changes he makes. He also does not threaten or lie no matter how heated our exchanges have been (and trust me, there were times...).

That was my understanding. Dolby surround became available for theaters in 1976 and in the home in 1982. Stereo TV broadcasts started in 1984 (in the US, anyway) so theoretically, TV shows could have been in Dolby Surround once stereo was available, but from what I can tell, no one used it until 1992 or 1993 and it took a few years to become universal. So you'll only see non-surround stereo for regular programming for DTV stuff made between 1982 and the mid nineties, TV from 1984 to the mid nineties and music. Commentaries and some dubs and made for video release, though, so there's no telling what they use.

Dolby surround was used on theatrical movies from 1976 to the early nineties when 5.1 took over and on TV from 1992 to 1993 or so up to the early aughts, when 5.1 also took over.

Keep in mind that you occasionally get throwbacks long after the fact. Some low-budget movies and TV shows are still in mono and there are a few TV shows out there still in Dolby surround as well. For instance, the Simpsons only went to 5.1 last year. (for broadcast, anyway)

I am not disagreeing with that, Bob, the Contributor should ALWAYS back up his changes and not just throw a dart at the wall.

Indeed.  Had he simply provided documentation, as Ace did, instead of attacking, this would have been over a long time ago.
