I recently did a change to a profile where there was a spelling mistake in a characters name this mistake also appeared on "That" web site so i would say always take cast and crew from the credits on the DVD.

Turner Broadcasting owns the largest film library on the planet.  If you think otherwise, prove it.

You get to make an unsubstantiated claim and I have to prove you wrong? OK. I'll play.

Estimate of 4,400 film titles in Warner catalog.
Estimate of 4,000 film titles in MGM catalog.
Estimate of Turner catalog at 2,800 titles.
1995 interview with Turner then-President in which he estimated the catalog size to be 3,800 titles.

On the main page of the TCM database, they advertise 150,000 titles in the database; therefore, "most" of their entries are not from their owned catalog.

According to this menu, TCM gets its key info from the AFI:

Also, users can contribute to their database. Here's the "About" page.
Here's the contribution form:

Note that one has to include a source.

Don't care.  The whole point was that the information was accurate, unlike IMDB.  Also, it isn't just a matter of how many titles are in the catalog, but of who owns the catalog.

Correctness isn't an issue. The question was if TCMDB is a 3rd party database - which it obviously is - and therefore not allowed as a source.

If Invelos is going to ban the entire use of "3rd Party Sites/sources" then I see a future where there will be fewer and fewer contributions.

...

Invelos has always banned copying from third party sources (and IVS did two years back).

If you find an "Official Site" for a film or TV show, it is not a "third party source", it would be "second party" and the DVD is "first party".

It is just not that much work on most films to enter the cast and crew data by hand from the film credits. I have my PC setup with dual screens to make it easy, DVDProfiler on the main screen and PowerDVD running on the other. For release date and SRP I start at DVDPriceSearch.com and then use the links to check two or three other sites. For most films I can enter a full profile with cover scans in just under an hour. The really hard ones are films where the credits use a font so small that they all fuzz into a blob.

Paul:

Even Official or "sanctioned" sites are rife with errors. NOTHING supersedes the data on the disc. From one who knows.

Skip

Skip,

That is why I said that an "Official Site" would be a "second party" source and that the DVD is a "first party" source.

We are on the same side here.

Contributions, especially those adding cast and crew, must include the source of the data in the contribution notes.  We will be taking a harder line on this requirement going forward, so please include the source when you contribute.

Secondary note - the notes must be in English.  You're welcome to write native language notes, but please also include an English translation, even if you have to use an automated translation.

This is not a wink wink, nudge nudge "rule".  We do not want IMDB data, or data from any third party database, entered into DVD Profiler.  The reason for this is that they have invested much time and money (as we have) into generating and maintaining their database.  Copying their database is theft.  If that weren't enough reason, third party databases routinely spike their data with "poison" data - false data designed to identify and prove cases of theft.

The requirement for naming the source is not designed to allow Invelos plausible deniability.  If the submitted data came from the IMDB or another source, we need to know that so we may properly decline the submission.  Falsely stating the source of data in an attempt to bypass this will result in an immediate and permanent ban from contributing.

Copying cast and crew entries from another entries is permissable.  Just list that as your source.  You should try to verify that the version of the film is the same before the copy, and be sure to check the contribution notes of the source profile.

Ken, I take this to mean that if the contribution notes of the source profile do NOT specify the actual credits as source for the data, then the data from the source profile MUST be checked before submitting the new profile?

Just make sure your notes are accurate - if the source profile indicates a correct source, put that in the contribution notes.

Ken, may I suggest you add something to the rules to address this?

There will no doubt be people voting NO to contributions that do not follow your direction and we all know not everybody reads the forum. It could only help if you clarify Invelos' position with a rule revision (IMO that is).

On a more serious note, it does seem a shame to exclude our non-english speaking colleagues.
What do you guys think about starting a thread where certain stock phrases can be listed alongside their translations?
Phrases like:
"cast & crew taken from credits"
"used <insert program> to verify audio / subtitles / region " etc..
"spelling mistake that's not on DVD"

and so on...

that way, those that can't write english notes can look for the phrases they want to use in their own language and copy & paste the english equivalent into their notes.

What do you think?
